Ian Powell, I am missing the "usbreset" in your comment#94.
Please use plain "/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb" without "2>/dev/null" because we are interested in its debug messages.
I had mentioned "2>/dev/null" only FYI as explanation how things work, cf. comment#91
