[Bug 1088579] New: During first install, "boot loader settings" screen is confusing.
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1088579 Bug ID: 1088579 Summary: During first install, "boot loader settings" screen is confusing. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.0 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 766373 --> http://bugzilla.suse.com/attachment.cgi?id=766373&action=edit screenshot of the situation During first install, "boot loader settings" screen is confusing. See attached photo. One of the entries say: "Boot from partition", but it does not say which partition (my disk has nine). Thus I have to use the "Custom boot partition" and write it myself to be safe. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I believe it means 'partition that has the /boot dir'. Maybe change the wording to 'Boot from system partition (/dev/sda9)' or so?
Josef?
well, it is smart choice depending on several criterias like if /boot is on own partition or if partition is logical, then it install to extended. What we can do is to add probably kernel name for it, but then it can be still quite long as for e.g. logical partitions, it can be multiple physical partitions. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sure it is a smart choice, but the user has to be told of what was the decision, somehow. In fact, in my case, the summary screen did say something like "the partition containing /boot" (I have another photo if you want). But the detailed screen did not (as shown in the attached photo), it just said "boot from partition", which is very confusing.
I remember that on the old partitioner one choice was the /boot partition (if it existed), the "/" root partition, and maybe, I do not remember this, the extended partition. I can perhaps verify this if wanted. That is, there were several choices with descriptions.
yes, it used to be there such entries and then user can easily select wrong one which result in non-booting env. So now it is simplified to partition and disk. I agree that for partition, we should inject there what partition will be in fact selected. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
