[Bug 269870] New: Clean up /tmp dir regulary by default
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=269870 Summary: Clean up /tmp dir regulary by default Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: martin@gamesplace.info QAContact: qa@suse.de The /tmp dir should be cleaned regulary so that it does not grow without control. I know that it is possible to change that behavior in openSuSE, but it should do by default as it may confuse users (A friends' tmp dir grew up to more than 1 GB). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Are some programs not cleaning up their tmp files or is this a result of user interaction? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

When you shut down your computer without closing Firefox, this files are being kept. I will get more examples ASAP. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I read about tmpreaper in connection with a gentoo system and found its source here: http://packages.debian.org/stable/admin/tmpreaper To add some examples, I have one system back from SuSE 9.0, upgraded to 9.3, then 10.0. Looking in /tmp sudo du -sc /tmp 1856714 /tmp 1856714 total There are some PDF files, probably from Firefox downloads. Then there are a bunch of empty directories of type YaST2-08080-VKWUde. Most of them are from 2004 and 2005. Then there are a bunch of empty directories of type sax2-7500. All of them from 2005. By far the most single source entries (~100) seem to come from Adobe Acrobat. Some of them also have the biggest size, with as big as: -rw------- 1 user1 users 2048000 2005-09-09 22:06 Acro000BgLvGO Alltogether there are 565 folder/files in the /tmp folder of that system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

On the other hand I would not delete files automatically, it can destroy valid data. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
