[Bug 672622] New: kde 4.6: kdebase4-runtime missing symlink to drkonqi
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672622 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672622#c0 Summary: kde 4.6: kdebase4-runtime missing symlink to drkonqi Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: jnelson-suse@jamponi.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 SUSE/3.6.13-0.2.1 Firefox/3.6.13 The kdebase4-runtime rpm is missing a symlink to /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/drkonqi which needs to go in /usr/bin. This is the same mechanism that kdesu, for example, uses. Applications that crash have a hard time finding drkonqi if it's not (also?) in /usr/bin. This seems like an easy fix to the packaging.... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What do you mean with "Applications that crash have a hard time finding drkonqi if it's not (also?) in /usr/bin." I have never seen the problem, that after a crash DrKonqi did not appear. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When that happens, I almost always see messages in ~/.xsession-errors regarding "can't find DrKonqi" or some such -- eventually, I traced this to apps looking in $PATH for drkonqi and not finding it. I brought up kdesu because kdesu is also located in /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec but a symlink in /usr/bin is present, allowing apps that aren't configured to look in /lib64/kde4/libexec to find it via $PATH. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do you have more details by now? Because I see no value in adding a symlink because you think it should be done. kdesu is different - as people can call it manually. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672622 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=672622#c7 --- Comment #7 from Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net> 2011-10-13 13:12:26 UTC --- I can't remember what the name of the application was. Maybe it was konversation, I can't recall. In any case, it (a KDE app) crashed and I expected to see the crash handler. I didn't. I checked ~/.xsession-errors and saw messages about not being able to find drkonqi, and my investigation ultimately lead me to determine that some apps were expecting drkonqi to be on the $PATH. Is there a downside to adding the symlink? Incidentally, drkonqi *is* useful at the commandline for generating tracebacks, even if they don't get submitted to bugs.kde.org. If it means anything, Debian/Ubuntu have drkonqi in /usr/bin -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And people who use drkonqi to generate backtraces of random processes are expected to find it wherever it is, really. If there is a real problem - I mean, a real application really having problems finding drkonqi, let us know. Or even better: file a bug at bugs.kde.org, if ever distribution is supposed to have it in $PATH; upstream better does not install it in a hidden path. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
