[Bug 566371] New: freezes at video startup for AMD Turion 64 with ATI Radeon X200 graphics
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566371 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=566371#c0 Summary: freezes at video startup for AMD Turion 64 with ATI Radeon X200 graphics Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: my.sierras@accutek.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/4.3) KHTML/4.3.1 (like Gecko) SUSE Total freeze of computer -- blank screen, no hard disk function, and keyboard inoperable -- when booting of OpenSuse 11.2 reaches the point of starting the video: on systems with AMD Turion 64 with ATI Radeon X200 (200M) graphics. KDE was the selected desktop. OpenSUSE 11.2 64-bit was used, but same problem has been noticed on 32-bit version by zdnet. The lastest Fedora and Mandriva work okay on the hardware, as did OpenSUSE 11.1; only OpenSUSE 11.2 fails. Solution is to use "vesa" driver in xorg.conf instead of "radeon" driver, which of course results in inferior video. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install OpenSUSE 11.2 on AMD Turion 64 with ATI Radeon X200 graphics. KDE desktop. 2. Attempt to boot into system. Actual Results: Freeze of computer 90% of the time at the point the video is loaded; about 10% of the time, the video will load and the system will enter KDE. Expected Results: Computer should not freeze and the video system should start up properly. This bug has also been noticed with the 32-bit OpenSUSE on the same hardware at zdnet: http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,1000000567,10014494o-2000498448b,00.htm -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So far, this seems to have resolved the issue. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Probably fixed with the xorg-11-driver-video update in
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg:/11.2/openSUSE_11.2/
Please give it a try.
This seems to have worked for me as well (Acer Aspire 5100, AMD Turion 64 X2, ATI Radion Zpress 1100 graphics) - 32bit install. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But 20% of the time it will only make it to kdm4 login screen AND the keyboard will be dead, so one has to reboot and try again. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, about 25% of the time, booting results in getting only as far as the KDM login screen; originally I reported that the keyboard will not work; however, I found that if I wait for one minute (the hard-disk light is on constantly during this time), then the keyboard will work properly and I can login normally through that KDM screen -- no need to reboot. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
