[Bug 717377] New: Desktop 12.1 M5 Gnome doesn't boot on AsusM4A89 GTD w/MMD 890 GX - boot only in Failsafe mode
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=717377 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=717377#c0 Summary: Desktop 12.1 M5 Gnome doesn't boot on AsusM4A89 GTD w/MMD 890 GX - boot only in Failsafe mode Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Milestone 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: terje@nordland-teknikk.no QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:6.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.2 After manual correcting the disk destination in the Grub menu.lst, as reported in Bug 717321: Desktop openSUSE 12.1 M5 - 3.0.0-4 wouldn't boot, seemed to freeze and resulted in a black (and nothing more visible) after the first display message 'Doing fast boot' Failsafe mode did boot and displayed the GDM login menu. At the first logon attempt, some error messages occured: Gnome 3 could not start correct and starts in 'Reserve' mode. The system, graphic hardware or driver don't support Gnome 3. At later logon attempts in Failsafe mode, these error messages were not displayed again. I was able to logon to the desktop. The resolution was to small, 1450x1050 maximum (should be 1920x1080) and the screen size is somewhat too small and doesn fill the display. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. As above 2. 3. Actual Results: As above Expected Results: Boot Desktop mode correctly as openSUSE 11.4 has done before 12.1 and as the current Tumbleweed 3.0.4-43 does -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=717377 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=717377#c1 --- Comment #1 from Terje J. Hanssen <terje@nordland-teknikk.no> 2011-09-13 20:54:06 UTC --- I added the grub parameter 'nomodeset' for Desktop openSUSE 12.1 M5 - 3.0.0-4 (as used in Failsafe mode, and as currently suggested on the opensuse-testing list). Then the Desktop openSUSE 12.1 M5 - 3.0.0-4 booted to the GDM login menu, and I could login to Gnome with the correct resolution. But I'm unsure this is the default Gnome 3 mode, possibly just a fallback mode(?), as I couldn't find the gnome-shell process running. When I ran the gnome-shell command in a Gnome terminal, I got the following output error: terje@linux-2cdy:~> gnome-shell failed to create drawable (gnome-shell:7395): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX context Feil i vindushåndterer: Unable to initialize Clutter. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hanssen <terje@nordland-teknikk.no> 2011-09-24 09:17:16 UTC --- By removing 'nomodeset' from menu.lst the following happends: On the Asus AsusM4A89 GTD w/MMD 890GX (ATI) grahic: - M12.1 Factory doesn't boot as described initially, just a black screen (and nothing more visible). The last message on the console is 'Doing fast boot' On the hp8710w/Intel/nVidia machine: - M12.1 Factory boots ok into Gnome 3 with clutter That is, the issue looks to be that 'nomodeset' disable hardware accelerated graphic so that Gnome 3 login to Fallback mode only. But Asus won't boot without 'nomodeset', so there looks to be an issue (drm) with the free 'radeonhd' driver available with 12.1. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I've searched after my original bug, but it looks like someone on has changed my original bug heading wrong to nouveau (Nvidia)(?) As described in my first, initial line above, this bug report continued separately from bug 717321 (which was on an Asus M4A89 GTD Pro/USB3 based machine). Even though in comment #3 above I did a comparision with another new installation on another hardware, a hp8710w mobile workstation w/nVidia Quadro FX 3600M, the next comments #4 and #5 above again specify the xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd and AMD 890GX (ATI) grahic.
