[Bug 508554] New: Shutdown process (Restart) reports "Oops umount failed" -- CD remains locked
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508554 Summary: Shutdown process (Restart) reports "Oops umount failed" -- CD remains locked Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Milestone 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: dukebright@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042316 Firefox/3.0.10 I have an MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard with an Athlon-64 CPU. It has a SATA CD/DVD burner, which boots the openSUSE 11.2 M2 KDE4 LiveCD. SuSE locks the CD while it is running, so I cannot manually eject the CD. When I shut down KDE, telling it to restart, the scrolling list of commands briefly reports "Oops umount failed" and then completes the shutdown, to a BIOS restart. The CD remains locked. I can boot into Windows XP, and it will unlock the CD, but otherwise I have to power off the computer to unlock it -- a hardware reboot is not enough. Earlier versions of openSuSE also do this, as did Knoppix 5.x. However, Knoppix 6.0, which is very close to Debian, does not. It has fixed this problem. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot openSuSE 11.2 M2 KDE LiveCD Build 0116, default options. 2. In KDE, select shut down with reboot. 3. Watch the shutdown message scroll for an Oops Actual Results: CD remains locked, every time. Expected Results: Knoppix 6.0 opens the CD bay and gives me 2 minutes to remove the CD and close the bay. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does the LiveCD have the fix, or do I need to do an install? The startup and shutdown are much faster, so I do not see the "Oops" message. The CD remains unresponsive even after the computer reboots, and does not unlock until Windows XP has reached the GUI. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The fix for this is going to be to find the cause of the oops. Can you set up a serial or netconsole to capture the oops? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That's not a full oops, it's from /etc/init.d/boot.localfs. "Oops: umount failed :-( -- trying to remount readonly..." Since the root file system is on the CDROM, I guess it makes sense that the tray remains locked if it can't umount it. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please confirm that the Live CD is a suitable platform for these tests. Yes, since I believe this problem only exists when using the Live CD. The CD-ROM tray remains locked when the file system is mounted. If you were using an installed system, I don't think we'd be able to reproduce it as easily. 1. Do you want this discussion offline via email, or through bugzilla? Through Bugzilla so the record stays with the report and get passed on to another owner if needed. 2. I am unfamiliar with "a serial or netconsole." Point me at some documentation. http://www.novell.com/communities/node/4753/netconsole-howto-send-kernel-boo... You can enable a serial console by monitoring the serial line on another system and booting the test system with "console=ttyS0,115200" 3. I have other computers available, so I can make a serial or network connection to the host computer. 4. I am reasonably competent, as a user, with VirtualBox. If its "passthrough" CD connection can reproduce the problem, that might give us more control. This might actually end up being really useful because then we can modify the LiveCD to dump information without having to burn a new CD for every test attempt. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The log reads: Unmounting file systems umount: /: device is busy. Stopping udevd: Sending all processes the TERM signal... End of transcript. The "Oops" is in red and the text following it, plus the next 4 lines are green. It appears to me that capturing the details is going to be even more difficult now that we have seen the "Segmentation fault." Now, about how I got it ... Early on in the netconsole instructions: "2. Load the netconsole module at boot time". That obviously is not an option for an unmodified Live CD. Anyway, after following the instructions on setting up the config files (with /etc/modprobe.conf.local replaced by /etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf), I tried "modprobe netconsole" and got the reply: "Fatal: Error inserting netconsole (...): operation not permitted." So I shut SuSE down and watched the screen. I noticed the Oops stayed on the screen about half a second, so I photographed it, and transcribed the photograph ;-) If you have suggestions for something else for me to try, let me know. If I haven't heard from you by this weekend, I'll try running the Live CD in VirtualBox with CD passthrough, and see if the same problem occurs there. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508554 User dukebright@gmail.com added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508554#c7 --- Comment #7 from Duke Winsor <dukebright@gmail.com> 2009-09-04 09:55:16 MDT --- Update: VirtualBox does not appear a practical option (though it demonstrates the nasty mode in which the CD is left...) I booted the Milestone 6 LiveCD in VirtualBox 2.2.4 with CD passthrough. The bootup was quite different from one directly on the hardware. There were significant periods of black screen, but it did finally come up to a normal GUI. When I told SuSE to "shut down, restart" the confirmation prompt was virtually unreadable (almost totally black). After I clicked it, the screen went black and stayed that way for about 5 minutes, until I told VB to give it Ctrl-Alt-Del. Thst produced a dozen or so lines of pseudo-random, mostly green, pixels scrolling down from the top of the screen, and again, no further sign of life. There was absolutely no trace of a shutdown system log. I then told VB to power-off SuSE. My host OS is Windows XP 64. After I shut down the SuSE guest and VB, I tried to eject the CD with Windows Explorer. XP was able to read the files on the CD, but it was unable to eject the CD. I had to reboot the host OS before I could unlock the CD. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

"modprobe netconsole" and got the reply: "Fatal: Error inserting netconsole (...): operation not permitted."
You have to run that command as root. So in the console run the command `su` before trying to run modprobe. The password is either blank or "linux" IIRC. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
