Hi
(In reply to Manfred Hollstein from comment #8)
I'm not sure this is related, but when booting the 5.18.8-2.g296483f kernel I still have this in the journal:
systemd[1]: systemd-vconsole-setup.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'. systemd[1]: Failed to start Setup Virtual Console.
However, the 5.18.8-2 kernel happily continues booting!
Does the kernel boot if you give 'nosimplefb' on the kernel command line?
Best regards Thomas
No, unfortunately it still hangs - just tried it. Cheers. l8er manfred -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1201205 http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1201205#c12 --- Comment #12 from Dronskowski <malted.dev@gmail.com> --- I have the same issue. I'm using Takeshi Iwai's simpledrm kernels from https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/simpledrm/standard/ on two different devices for a few months - no issues so far. That worked fine until a few days ago when the "systemd[1]: Failed to start Setup Virtual Console" error appeared but the boot continued just fine. The latest kernel build (5.18.9-6.1.ge00841d-x86_64) hangs (visually) after this error message on both devices. Previous builds 5.18.9-5.1.ge0e67dc1 and 5.18.8-6.1.g296483f and non-simpledrm 5.18.6-1.1 work fine. As far as I can tell, the boot process continues even with 5.18.9-6.1.ge00841d as journalctl continues after the vconsole error, mounts volumes, starts plymouth etc. Adding "nosimplefb" doesn't solve the issue - at least not with the simpledrm build. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi
[...]
Thank you so much for this stacktrace. This looks like a problem that we recently fixed in the upstream kernel. Yesterday, I backported the patch into out stable branch. So this problem should be fixed in the next kernel update.
Sorry for all the inconvenience with the graphics stack in recent weeks. We try to modernize it, but it's not a trivial issue.
Please, don't apologize. :) I've chosen Tumbleweed for a reason and I (mostly) enjoy using a bleeding edge distro. The team has made many good decisions in the past (e.g. using btrfs and automatic snapshots resulting in only two keypresses to revert to an older kernel) that pay off. Using KDE Wayland with multiple screens is taking much more of a toll. And the little inconvenience is absolutely compensated by the fast handling of the issue here. (Also I've been consciously using tiwai's simpleDRM builds for the last few months, since the announcement on the mailing list, and have had no issues so far. Accordingly from my pov the modernization of the graphics stack is going really smoothly :) ) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thank you so much for this stacktrace. This looks like a problem that we recently fixed in the upstream kernel. Yesterday, I backported the patch into out stable branch. So this problem should be fixed in the next kernel update. Upcoming TW snapshot has kernel 5.18.9, including the aforementioned the patch?

Hi
(In reply to Manfred Hollstein from comment #22)
Just wanted to confirm that kernel-default-5.18.9-3.ga7c5f9c-default no longer has the problem, thanks for fixing!
Here's my current setup:
- TW20220705 - kernel-default-5.18.9-3.ga7c5f9c-default
Thanks for testing. I close this issue as fixed.
Let me just add that kernel-default-5.18.9-3.1.ga7c5f9c.x86_64 from kernel:stable with simpledrm enabled boots just fine. Thanks for your efforts. I appreciate it.

Just for completeness' sake: kernel-default 5.18.9-7.ga7c5f9c from tiwai's simpleDRM repository also works fine.
Thanks to both of you for verifying. Best regards Thomas -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
