[Bug 660764] New: After Full Screen X Applications The Monitor Frequency Defaults Back to Auto
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=660764 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=660764#c0 Summary: After Full Screen X Applications The Monitor Frequency Defaults Back to Auto Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Milestone 5 of 6 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rob.opensuse.linux@googlemail.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b7) Gecko/20101105 Firefox/4.0b7 The KMS & Xorg default Monitor Resolution on my CRT is 1600x1200 @ 85Hz, which unfortunately results in some visible sloping lines at top of display, so using 75 Hz refresh rate is preferable. Adjust the Display and Monitor with KDE4 System Settings, and save them as Defaults. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set non default Monitor Frequency 2. Run Full Screen capable application like Neverball or Extreme Tux Racer 3. Observe changed Display resolution, after closing game back to desktop. Actual Results: After running full screen applications the Monitor is reverted to 85 Hz refresh, the auto chosen option. Expected Results: Want KMS, Xorg & KDE4 to allow user to control Monitor Resolution & Frequency to suit the actual display and end user preferences. It is not clear to me how the Kernel boot display mode, and starting the Xorg graphical mode with KMS is meant to allow sysadmin to set best system default mode. Relying on Desktop Environment per user settings is sub-optimal. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You can add another 1600x1200@75Hz mode via xrandr --newmode <name> ... (use the 75Hz modeline from X logfile) xrandr --addmode <output> <name> and switch to it via xrandr --output <output> --mode <mode> See "man xrandr" and "xrandr --help" for more details. In your case "radeon" driver is in use. By adding "nomodeset" as boot option you can switch to "radeonhd" driver instead. Hope this helps. So I selected something, saved it as default, then if I run something else it changes this saved default desktop setting, rather than putting it back. This is just against the philosophy of any sound UI design. If you go from a destkop mode, to full screen, then any reasonable expectation is for the same settings to be restored. Why on earth is DDC being queried? That's been over-ridden by user selection, it's one thing auto-generating defaults and another to ignore a previous setup. Starting a fullscreen application, then leaving it, the settings ought to be recovered like they were on stack! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have been able to set the 1600x1200@75Hz via the xrandr based KDE display config in System settings.
Congratulation!
So I selected something, saved it as default, then if I run something else it changes this saved default desktop setting, rather than putting it back.
This is just against the philosophy of any sound UI design.
Sounds like an application bug to me to switch resolution setting for fullscreen mode, but not restoring it afterwards.
If you go from a destkop mode, to full screen, then any reasonable expectation is for the same settings to be restored.
I agree (see above).
Why on earth is DDC being queried? That's been over-ridden by user selection, it's one thing auto-generating defaults and another to ignore a previous setup.
Starting a fullscreen application, then leaving it, the settings ought to be recovered like they were on stack!
