[Bug 728336] New: gnome-color-manager (part of GNOME 3) doesn't work in openSUSE
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728336 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=728336#c0 Summary: gnome-color-manager (part of GNOME 3) doesn't work in openSUSE Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: glesage@suse.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- gnome-color-manager is a standard part of GNOME 3… and doesn't work in openSUSE. There are a few reasons why it doesn't work: 1) argyllcms isn't installed by default (and it's a dependency for gnome-color-manager to work) 2) argyllcms isn't even packaged in the main repository (it's in multimedia:photo) 3) gnome-color-manager even knows that argyll must be installed, however, it silently fails when trying to install the package (due to #2) 4) monitor awareness and default profiles are not set up by default (and are missing from the session) unless one toggles the color setting in dconf under org > gnome > settings-daemon > plugins > color > active (this can be accomplished using dconf-editor) 5) when the color plugin is activated, it prompts the user several times for the administrator password; there's some issue with authentication where it isn't given the correct privileges a single time 6) similar to #5, an admin password is needed a couple times each time the profile is changed Issue #3 (and basically #1 & #2) are related to a longstanding bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619915 Issues #5 & #6 also affect the GNOME 3 desktop in other ways, but aren't as painful as in the color management settings. It appears to be related to this bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=706908 All together, these bugs make it impossible to calibrate one's screen with openSUSE 12.1 and keep using the generated profiles (as one must manually toggle the dconf key each time, and then enter their root password several times after that for *every* time a session is started). A user may even see these password prompts for calibration even if they do not have a device, too. I saw this after installing openSUSE 12.1 RC2 on my mom's and nephew's computer as well as my netbook and workstation @ work. (I did try to calibrate my netbook and my workstation @ work, but the issues above prevented me from using it, even after adding the photo repo for the argyllcms package, installing argyll, making a profile for each monitor, etc.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(I also have a Spyder 3 & an i1, but the problems would also affect those too.) Also, I tried to calibrate my webcams, but these issues stopped that as well. (For that, I was going to use my ColorChecker, which is used for imaging devices like scanners and cameras.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just recently installed argyll - haven't seen a huge differene though... but at least it's there now - from multimedia:photo... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

gnome-color-manager is a standard part of GNOME 3… and doesn't work in openSUSE.
There are a few reasons why it doesn't work:
1) argyllcms isn't installed by default (and it's a dependency for gnome-color-manager to work)
2) argyllcms isn't even packaged in the main repository (it's in multimedia:photo)
3) gnome-color-manager even knows that argyll must be installed, however, it silently fails when trying to install the package (due to #2)
I didn't know about argyllcms :/ I'll see if it can get pushed for next release. I'm not sure it should be a hard dependency, but at least a Recommends, I guess.
4) monitor awareness and default profiles are not set up by default (and are missing from the session) unless one toggles the color setting in dconf under org > gnome > settings-daemon > plugins > color > active (this can be accomplished using dconf-editor)
I didn't have that on a brand new 12.1 install. I guess you had the plugin disabled at some point in the past?
5) when the color plugin is activated, it prompts the user several times for the administrator password; there's some issue with authentication where it isn't given the correct privileges a single time
That's really bug 698250.
6) similar to #5, an admin password is needed a couple times each time the profile is changed
Same thing, I guess. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Though I don't have any problems with dialogs popping up; Instead I can't see any devices in the device list nor can I add any. Pressing "Add device" will pop up a dialog where I can choose between Scanner, Printer, Camera and Webcam. No there's not even the option available to select monitors (should there be one?). Starting gnome-control-center from the terminal and clicking on "Color" throws out the following terminal messages: (gnome-control-center:5533): color-cc-panel-WARNING **: Failed to GetSensors: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files (gnome-control-center:5533): color-cc-panel-WARNING **: failed to add connected devices: Failed to GetDevices: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files By the way, I also manually installed argyllcms but it made no difference. If anyone have a workaround, I'd appreciate if you posted it. But in openSUSE Factory, 13.1 snapshot, things again don't work properly. On each GNOME start, I see a message: Warning iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile And clicking to Details >> shows: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile 16:26:36 iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile 16:26:36 (The last number seems to be a time.) And the second window shows: DELL U2412M @ 0, 0, 1920x1200: Display profile couldn't be loaded. Note that "iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile" may come from libpng and an incorrect embedded profile in some PNG images. colord itself works in a strange way. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it does not start, and colors "magically" change 10 minutes or 1 hour or so after GNOME start. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
