They all started after installing openSuSE v13.1 on a Acer Aspire 3450 (with radeon HD4250 graphics). After some time, the computer would freeze. I went back to v12.3, and am having the same problem. Then it happened to my office computer (very different architecture) with v12.3. Now it has happened early in the v13.1 installation process on a brand new computer. I have been able to get some log files. Details will come in separate posts. The keyboard/mouse/display were frozen, but I could ssh in and look at log files. Then I rebooted. The 'canary thread' comments were the last entries in the warn file before reboot. It has a Biostar TA970 MB, an AMD FX-8320 processor, and a Gigabyte PCI-e card with AMD Bonaire XT HD- 7790/8770 radeon. OpenSuSE v13.1 (with KDE) installed fine from the DVD. I updated the installed rpms via YaST. From my 13.1 installation at home, I had a list of rpms that I wanted. The update (with YaST) started. Then the system froze. I turned off the computer about 1:30 to attend a meeting. Afterwards, I booted the computer and attempted to complete the rpm update. But the keyboard/mouse/display froze as the system was attempting to update the repository listings. Fortunately, I could ssh in from a nearby computer and grab some log files. They include warn, messages (very large), boot.log, and the .xsessions-:0 (which has many puzzling comments). Back at work, I could replace the open radeon driver with the proprietary driver. The computer has been working fine ever since. In the case of my Acer computer (comment 1), the freezes with V12.3 became less over time, especially after kernel updates. To avoid future problems with the HD4250 graphics (which can only use the open radeon driver), I recently (a week ago) abandoned the computer for a nice HP 6305 one. It also has radeon graphics. But it has never given any freezes or other problems, even with the open radeon driver. I have just assembled another computer at work with a ASUS HD6450 graphics card. It has been running fine for a couple of days with the open radeon driver. Apparently, there was some kind of a problem between the V13.1 kernel (on the download ISO) and the open radeon driver. Things have improved. But the story highlights the dangers of insufficient testing before a new version is released. The information I provided may still be useful to you. Yet, as far as I am concerned, the problems are resolved. Thank you for looking at it.
