https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679189 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679189#c0 Summary: OpenSuse 11.4 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: roger@clavera.cat QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 When I use OpenSUSE 11.4 the fans are always turning I just installed Opensuse 11.4 in my desktop: HP Pavilion P6210es: IPMEL_AE (Evans) Chipset Intel G41 Express Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 RAM 4GB Nvidia GeForce G210 3 x HD 500GB SATA (Win7+OpenSUSE 11.4+Ubuntu 10.10) It is in a HD, and I have 2 HD more one with Win7 and the last with Ubuntu 10.10. When I run OpenSUSE 11.4 a fan does not stop, it is always turning. I opened the computed to see which fan is working and I saw both fans are turning: processor fan and case fan. It did not happen in OpenSUSE 11.2 (the previous version I had). It does not happen with the others OS. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start computer. From your provided info, fan control related ACPI objects such as thermal zone and fan power resource is missing. It looks to me that fan speed or on/off control is not governed by ACPI firmware.
To me one other possible cause is the lm_sensors if your machines has sensors installed. It would regulate your fan speed as well. Try the command below and see if it outputs anything, and paste it to bugzilla for reference. $ grep . /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon*/device/* Some nodes that is relevant to fan, according to [1] - pwm[1-*]: Used to control fan speed - pwm[1-*]_enable: fan control method. 0 - no control (full speed), 1 - manual, 2 auto. - fan[1-*]_input: Show fan speed (in Revolution Per Minute) [1] http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/hwmon/sysfs-interface You could also try "sensors" package and see if the fancontrol within it works for you. I think google it has some useful instructions on how to do it. :) Please let us know your result. Thanks. :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There's tons of complaining that it drives noisy fan like a tank or 747 taking off. [1] [2] [3] [4] The situation is that Nouveau lacks power management feature, its fan speed control is horrible not implemented and on some hardware defaults to *full* speed [5] As far as I know, there's no remedy on user-space so far, but some progress is in the kernel and probably in a near future it's possible. [6] Instead, could you try the proprietary Nvidia driver and see it fixes the issue for you? [7] HTH.
