A temporary fix would be to use alsa-driver-kmp on multimedia:audio:KMP repo, http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/ (choose openSUSE_11.1-Update). This contains the very latest alsa-driver snapshot. Install alsa-driver-kmp-$FLAVOR.rpm, and don't install alsa-driver-unstable-kmp-*.rpm. The latter is an unstable version just for testing. Buried in the new mixer settings is speaker. Running the volume up on speaker then provides sound.
