[Bug 506812] New: install CD ruins Intel Matrix Raid 0+1 on i720, and affects BIOS WITHOUT starting the install at all
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=506812 Summary: install CD ruins Intel Matrix Raid 0+1 on i720, and affects BIOS WITHOUT starting the install at all Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: takbal@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042316 Firefox/3.0.10 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) i720 ga-ex58-ud5 motherboard, Windows XP64 installed in a matrix RAID0 250GB + RAID1 431GB configuration on dual 500GB HDD, operating system is on RAID0. Still had place on the RAID0 partition and tried to install SuSE 11.1 on that. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. Insert x86-64 SuSE DVD while XP was running. Installed the bootloader (I suppose). Restart. 2. RAID volumes are shown in BIOS as normal. Selected SuSE installation to start instead Windows. Clicked through until HDD setup. 3. SuSE shows the RAID disks as separate entries, and it offers to install SuSE on one of the hard drives only. I deleted the entire partitioning suggestion and picked up the advanced option to check whether it is able to choose the proper RAID volume in the RAID list. I see three(?) RAID points installed, but their size does not match my expectations. The first is 250GB as expected, but the second one shows something like 137 GB, and I have a third strange one as 2.2MB. I panick and decide to read on the matter before continuing and select abort and click until reboot. Actual Results: Even though I did not apply ANY changes and decided to quit even before the partitioning was chosen, RAID is shown as screwed up in the BIOS. The first disk is marked as "non-raid disk" while the second is still a member, and accordingly, RAID0 is degraded while RAID1 is failed. I am quite upset at this point as it looks like SuSE removed the first drive from the RAID (and ruined it) even though I did not even start the installation! It is crazy but I have also lost one of the onboard LANs. It is not even enumerated in the device list on boot. No idea how it is possible. Fix tries: I was able to repair the RAID first re-creating the volume by adding back the first disk as a member in BIOS, mirroring the RAID0 in Windows from matrix raid controller, then reconnect the RAID1 volume. Since then, after power-down the drives always wake up as "off-line member" so I cannot boot into Windows. I am able to repair it only by booting into a live CD, checking the drives with an fdisk-like tool, then it comes up again as proper member, but at the next power down it is off-line again. Others have also reported this on other forums in different circumstances, so it might be an Intel-i720 related problem. For them a BIOS update solved it, I tried this but nothing changed, and the LAN did not come back as well. Expected Results: SuSE install should not even touch the HDDs until the user decides to actually start the installation, especially not in a way which screws up the entire RAID configuration permanently. I think it is a major and really upsetting bug. For fearing data loss I did not try to reproduce the bug. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
