https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763#c0 Summary: kernel 3.16.1-1... doesnt boot beyond displaying loading ramdisk then freeze Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201408* Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: abittner@abittner.de QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:32.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/32.0 Upgraded a perfectly working opensuse 13.1 system to factory from within the running system with removing all repos and adding factory repos and zypper dup. it fetched 1700+ packages installed them then i issued a reboot grub2 menu shows multiple entries in advanced view there are four lines with kernel 3.16.1-1 entries I think, some desktop and some default, i tried all of them all the 3.16.1-1.... ones but all only show up the two lines about loading initial ramdisk is the last line then nothing ever happens opensuse 13.1 was in 32bit x86 mode before, so i guess it upgraded to 32bit factory just the same hardware is an amd fm2 board with amd fm2 apu and some ddr3 ram and a single sata hdd, pretty simple setup. how can i maybe safemode or see more details or deactivate some of the fancier unstable features to maybe make it boot nevertheless? thanks. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763#c1 --- Comment #1 from andreas bittner <abittner@abittner.de> 2014-09-03 11:05:40 UTC --- the four entries with 3.16.1 kernel are named twice (desktop) and twice (default) and one of those two groups is additionally called "recovery" or so. none of these entries boot beyond the tree text lines showing that the kernel is starting to load and initial ramdisk after a longer while the machine resets/reboots itself on its own if nothing is being done. i have went into grub2 interactive mode with pressing key "e" on the keyboard and then trying nomodeset or failsafe or noapic anything else to try? any way to fix this disabled system in some way? Mainboard is: ASUS F2A85-M Pro Cpu is: AMD A10-5700 Ram is DDR3 32giga ram (maybe this is a problem? wasnt for opensuse 13.1 x86) any more hints on this? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763#c4 --- Comment #4 from andreas bittner <abittner@abittner.de> 2014-09-12 13:36:25 UTC --- i am still stuck with the system completely disabled (no boot any more) i have fetched the openSUSE-Factory-DVD-i586-Snapshot20140901-Media.iso and put it on a usb stick and booted rescue mode from that and chrooted into the system (simple sata disk, sda1=swap, sda2=/ (few tens of gigabytes) and the rest of the test disk is empty (a few terabyte disk or something) also this openSUSE-Factory-DVD-i586-Snapshot20140901-Media.iso media doesnt offer during install process to upgrade the existing system on the sda disk. all it offers is re-partitioning and or shrinking existing partitions and creating new root and home partitions and use those. so i wasnt able to "repair" install or upgrade over the existing / folder on disk as it didnt find it or offer it as a destination (it does find it and show it in the partition layout saying it will resize those or not touch them but add an sda2 and sda3 partitions and so on). is upgrade scenario not yet present on the current factory? :( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If not we may pray for best luck to use a local attached monitor (vga). Meanwhile, can you please try loading the kernel in command more. Follow the instructions here. 1. Type c to enter grub command mode. 2. Type kernel /boot/<YOUR KERNEL IMAGE> boot Does anything(kernel message) show up ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=894763#c10 --- Comment #10 from andreas bittner <abittner@abittner.de> 2014-09-16 09:19:07 UTC --- i grabbed the newer iso openSUSE-Factory-DVD-i586-Snapshot20140909-Media.iso and foce-upgraded from it via usb stick and the system now boots that newer kernel successfully, the screen turns black a second or two after the initramdisk message and then eventually shows kde so that zypper dup step or that kernel ruined the previously fine system and somehow created itself a kernel bootloader initrd configuration or something that would not boot and only freeze in that machine that newer iso now seems to work fine so far -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
