[Bug 416083] New: Sound distorted on Asus M3N-HT Mobo with AD1988B HDA Codec
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=416083 Summary: Sound distorted on Asus M3N-HT Mobo with AD1988B HDA Codec Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: bart.verweire@telenet.be QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other I managed to configure sound in OpenSuse 11 on a M3N-HT motherboard with onboard sound. The codec is AD1988B. The volume is too low, and sound is highly distorted. The speaker test would run like 'front ont ont ont ... left eft eft ...', with a lot of noise. I followed the guidelines in the OpenSuse SDB:AudioTroubleshooting article : http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AudioTroubleshooting There's a thread on the OpenSuse forum, but although I received positive and valuable feedback, there's no solution at this moment. The thread is available here : http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/391824-sound-distorted-asus-m3n-ht-mobo-... Below are some details about my configuration. Please not that the mixer values may be too high, but the problem also occurs on normal mixer values (+/- 70%), although volume is too low at that level. ==> alsa-info.sh output http://pastebin.ca/1094917 ==> tsalsa output http://nopaste.com/p/acPMbzflG ==> rpm -qa | grep alsa alsa-utils-1.0.17.git20080802-2.1 alsa-oss-32bit-1.0.17.git20080715-2.7 alsa-tools-1.0.17.git20080715-1.10 alsa-1.0.17.git20080802-6.1 alsa-driver-unstable-kmp-default-1.0.16.20080807_2.6.25.11_0.1-2.1 alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.16.20080807_2.6.25.11_0.1-3.1 alsa-oss-1.0.17.git20080715-2.7 alsaplayer-0.99.80-5.22 alsa-firmware-1.0.17.git20080617-2.1 alsa-plugins-1.0.17.git20080801-2.2 ==> cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.17. Do you still have low volume problem, or it's just distorted sounds? Also how did you test? Does the below also produce the bad sound? % aplay -Dhw /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav One thing you could try is to set bdl_pos_adj=0 option to snd-hda-intel. Add bdl_pos_adj=0 to "options snd-hda-intel" line in /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. You may get a warning from the driver, but just ignore it at first. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The culprit might be not in the sound driver but in a deeper level. Try to feed some sounds to line-in jack, and turn on "Line Playback Switch" and raise "Line Playback Switch". This is an analog-loopback. If this sound is also distorted, then the HD-audio codec itself is the problem. If this sounds OK, the problem is PCM playback. You can try also specifying position_fix option, position_fix=1. With this, the driver will read a different register as the DMA position. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Concerning the option position_fix=1, the results are mixed. Immediately after modifying the option, the distortion had disappeared (only some hiss). But then I tried to get sound in some other application, and the distortion and the repeats reappeared, and I can't get the sound right again. I even restarted the machine, but this didn't help. With the current settings, the repetitions and the distortion are even worse than before. I played with the options, but no combination gave any better result. This is a bit risky to patch the 11.0 kernel at this stage, so I'd like to close this as WONTFIX since there is always a workaround using alsa-driver-kmp. BTW, alsa-driver-unstable-kmp is the unstable version. You'd better to use alsa-driver-kmp instead. After removing unstable, install alsa-driver-kmp again, since both share the same directory and the later installed one overwrites. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
