[Bug 362798] New: DHCP Fails when using NetworkManager
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=362798 Summary: DHCP Fails when using NetworkManager Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: john.markh@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=195532) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=195532) Extract from /var/log/messages When using DHCP option to acquire IP address for wireless (using WEP) from router, it fails with the attached error message. When using static IP address, works as expected. By forcing usage of traditional method with ifup, I was able to use static IP address as well as DHCP client. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There's no other way to determine if it's correct or not other than try to use it. If it can't get a reply from a working DHCP server, it's usually means incorrect authentication information. There's no way for NM to detect the format of the WEP key so the user needs to select the right one. Try to select different wireless security modes from the applet (WEP 128-bit Passphrase, WEP 40/128-bit Hexadecimal and WEP 40/128-bit ASCII) and see if that fixes the issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

When I just switch to ifup (in NetworkS ettings - Yast), everything is working fine (connection to WEP and DHCP) without changing encryption key (The key I use is 128-bit Hexadecimal). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Both NM and ifup use wpa_supplicant to establish the connection, so if it doesn't work from NM, it must have something to do with the password and the selected security type and/or authentication type from the applet. Can you please try to select the different options from nm-applet and see if any of these fix it? Or alternatively, please attach your /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth1 here (make sure to replace your saved WEP key with something) which works and also let me know what values do you have in "Wireless Security" and in "Authentication" combo boxes when you try to connect from nm-applet and it fails. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

One again (and I wrote it too many time, but just to be on a safe side), once I switch to "Traditional ifup" wireless works flawlessly.
