But right now the passwords fields are empty so we could save the password only when it's not empty.
Wouldn't it be more confusing? Imagine you push main submit button and only see that the settings were written, but you don't know that actually password was not written. (Now it would not be possible anyway, as the password is required if you click password or main submit button) I still like current approach the most. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is it?
These buttons are intentional, so you can save forwarding email without a need to retyping your root password.
This usecase should better be solved with separate dialogs -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From the user`s perspective I would also expect, that if an entry exists, it is shown to me me (e.g. with placeholders/stars).
So, my suggestion would be ----------------------------------------------------------- [Icon] System Administrator Settings Password [*********] Forward mail to [ ] Cancel or [Save] -------------------------------------------------------------- "Confirm password" would be displayed if the user made some changes to the password. So, if the password is required for the change of forward mail account it could be sent as it is stored in the form. What do you think? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What do you think?
I think we should not change it now, maybe after the initial release. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Concerning users expectations the user just sees a form and the concept of a form (as it is also used in other modules) is to gather information and then to have one possibility to "save"/"cancel" the entries. Having 3 save options is just confusing: * if I press save next to the password dialog and cancel in the main navigation is my password saved?
Yes.
* if I press save in the main navigation and not in the forward field are my changes saved?
Yes.
"Confirm password" would be displayed if the user made some changes to the password.
So, if the password is required for the change of forward mail account it could be sent as it is stored in the form.
The password is not required for the forward mail change: and thats exactly why introduced these extra buttons, so you may change the mail and do not touch existing password.I -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think from user point of view is the best solution have one save and have checkboxes which says if user want to change value (could be also invisible). And if user change value in input, then check checkbox as user want to change value.
I like this proposal :-) How about not showing checkboxes but "revert" links which only appear if value was changed ? This way, users would be able the 'cancel' the value change ? -> downgrading to p4/future as of comment #14 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
