[Bug 954473] New: KDE Plasma locks up: Nouveau drivers report error (kernel backtrace) "resource sanity check"
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=954473 Bug ID: 954473 Summary: KDE Plasma locks up: Nouveau drivers report error (kernel backtrace) "resource sanity check" Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: 2015* Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: vlukas@gmx.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.21 (KHTML, like Gecko) konqueror/4.14.12 Safari/537.21 Build Identifier: Since upgrading to the latest Tumblweed on 2015-11-08 I experience grave issues when using the Desktop. I use KDE and employ the Nouveau drivers. That Tumbleweed upgrade installed Kernel 4.3.0 (from 4.2.4). I want to mention that I upgrade Tumbleweed regularly, an attachment containing the most recent weeks of zyppers logfile is provided, so you can compare packages versions. The problem is that after some usually short time, even immediately after KDE is ready, many programs such as Kwrite or Dolphin can not be launched anymore. Typing "kwrite" on the Konsole will simply hang. Ctrl + C can be pressed so that Konsole returns to a responsive command prompt. But typing kwrite again will make it hang again. Repeating this procedure often enough (a few time will suffice) will ventually make the whole desktop lock up, i.e. the mouse cursor still moves but it is no more possibly to work in opened applications or cycle through windows. Switching to a text console via Ctrl + F1 will not work either. The system must be rebooted. But it is still possible to run dmesg. Everytime an attempt is made to launch Kwrite on Konsole dmesg output related to Nouveau is generated, journalctl will also show these: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Start of dmesg output for Nouveau "BUG:" - too many of these will lead to system hang ----------- --------- Kernel 4.3.0 ----------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nov 09 15:20:07 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- End of dmesg output for Nouveau "BUG:" - too many of these will lead to system hang ------------- --------- Kernel 4.3.0 ------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I haved attached the complete dmesg output from booting the computer up to and including the above snippet. That attachment corresponds to the following actions: - Power on (restart actually) - Login in KDM - Pressing Alt + F2, then typing konsole in the mini command line - Entering dmesg in Konsole window. This already shows the first backtrace which is found in the attachment. - Opening a second Konsole tab. - In that new tab, typing kwrite. Kwrite is not launched successfully by that attempt. While gathering more information about this problem, I found in journactls output similar kernel backtraces to the above, beginning on 2015-10-27, but not earlier (heavily differing messages related to Nouveau are contained in the full log, these are not reproduced here). In the days from end of October until 2015-11-08 however, lockups of the entire desktop were NOT associated with these messages. After I was struck by the lockups with Kernel 4.3.0 I installed the older 4.2.4 in parallel to 4.3.0. When I boot the older Kernel I can not provoke the lockups. Kernel backtraces still occur. Interestingly when using the older Kernel and launching e.g. Kwrite in Konsole I get nv50_screen_create:717 - nouveau_screen_init failed: -12 libGL error: failed to create dri screen libGL error: failed to load driver: nouveau messages in the Konsole window. I have not noticed these messages in the time from 2015-10-27 up to 2015-11-08, even though, as you can see in the journalctl snippet below the Nouveau backtraces where already appearing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Start of journalctl output for Nouveau backtrace ----------- --------- Kernel 4.2.x, at the indicated date these were not followed by desktop lockups ----------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okt 27 15:42:10 linux-5rjk kernel: resource sanity check: requesting [mem 0xddf6d000-0xde06cfff], which spans more than 0000:01:00.0 [mem 0xdc000000-0xddffffff 64bit pref] Okt 27 15:42:10 linux-5rjk kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------ Okt 27 15:42:10 linux-5rjk kernel: WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 5113 at ../arch/x86/mm/ioremap.c:198 __ioremap_caller+0x2de/0x360() Okt 27 15:42:10 linux-5rjk kernel: Info: mapping multiple BARs. Upgrade to latest Tumbleweed 2. Boot into KDE / Plasma 3. Open Konsole 4. Enter kwrite Actual Results: Kwrite does not start (i.e. its window is not visible) Expected Results: Kwrite should be visible and usable. In October, there has been some activity in the Nouveau drivers considering KDE (Plasma) issues: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91598 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92504 Maybe that is related to my problems. To test, I also replaced the graphics card in my computer with another one which contains an equal GF8400GS chipset. This leads to the same type of kernel backtrace as shown above. To test, I also ran memtest86 from an Opensuse rescue medium for 45 minutes without any suspicious output. I also experience "flickering windows" which is likely this issue: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=340489 That does not worry me, but I want to mention it for completeness sake. But for further background info I believe I must also mention the following, which I did not report previously: I have another problem related to Nouveau since ca. mid 2015 (I suspect this coincides with the landing of KDEs Plasma Shell in Tumblweed, can that be?). That earlier problem is degraded mouse input after some time so that the keyboard must be used to cycle through individual applications. But inside individual application toplevel windows mouse input is still possible. The desktop eventually "regenerates" so that the mouse can be used again to select/activate different application toplevel windows. That chronologically earlier problem is heavily associated with Firefox usage - I can not remember that I ever got those symptoms without running Firefox.
