[Bug 543178] New: gscan2pdf should become a regular package of opensuse
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=543178 Summary: gscan2pdf should become a regular package of opensuse Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: wefing@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009090900 SUSE/3.0.14-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.14 Given the rising interest in gscan2pdf, I suggest gscan2pdf becoming a regular opensuse package. (I could not get hold of the package list of opensuse 11.2, but openfate did not return any hits for gscan2pdf.) Currently, zypper cannot resolve the dependencies of gscan2pdf-0.9.29-6.2.i586.rpm provided by http://software.opensuse.org: kato install/misc# zypper in gscan2pdf-0.9.29-6.2.i586.rpm Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... Resolving package dependencies... Problem: nothing provides perl-Config-General24 needed by gscan2pdf-0.9.29-6.2.i586 Solution 1: do not ask to install a solvable providing gscan2pdf = 0.9.29-6.2 Choose the above solution using '1' or cancel using 'c' [1/C]: c Exit 4 kato install/misc# zypper in perl-Config-General24 Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... 'perl-Config-General24' not found. Resolving package dependencies... Nothing to do. Exit 104 kato install/misc# zypper lr -d # | Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh | Priority | Type | URI | Service --+-----------------+-----------------+---------+---------+----------+--------+-----------------------------------------------------------------+-------- 1 | Packman | Packman | Yes | Yes | 99 | rpm-md | http://packman.mirrors.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/11.1/ | 2 | openSUSE 11.1-0 | openSUSE 11.1-0 | No | No | 99 | yast2 | cd:///?devices=/dev/sr0 | 3 | repo-debug | repo-debug | No | No | 100 | NONE | http://download.opensuse.org/debug/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/ | 4 | repo-non-oss | repo-non-oss | Yes | Yes | 100 | NONE | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/non-oss/ | 5 | repo-oss | repo-oss | Yes | Yes | 100 | NONE | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/ | 6 | repo-source | repo-source | No | No | 100 | NONE | http://download.opensuse.org/source/distribution/11.1/repo/oss/ | 7 | repo-update | repo-update | Yes | Yes | 20 | rpm-md | http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.1/ | Integrating gscan2pdf into opensuse will probably render manual fiddling with unresolvable dependencies obsolete. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. zypper in gscan2pdf-0.9.29-6.2.i586.rpm 2. 3. Actual Results: Problem: nothing provides perl-Config-General24 needed by gscan2pdf-0.9.29-6.2.i586 Expected Results: zypper should be able to load all dependent packages. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Regarding DjVu: According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DjVu "The mask image is compressed using a method called JB2 (similar to JBIG2)." and "JBIG" rings my alarm bells because JBIG has patent issues, see http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/jbigkit/patents.html I don't know about JB2 but I feel unsafe so that - if at all - we could only package it after a thorough analysis regarding legal issues with gscan2pdf - do not confuse GPL sources with other possible legal issues, carefully read https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=342704#c1 According to http://www.xsane.org/doc/sane-xsane-multipage-doc.html XSane supports multipage PDF too so that I wonder if we really need gscan2pdf. I.e. what is the advantage of gscan2pdf over XSane? I close this request for a new package with "wontfix" because we already provide the functionality via XSane and the new package might even cause legal issues. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
