I guess the strange happenings to your desktop afterwards, has to do with the fact that the kded4 process is no longer running. You can try to see if starting kded4 )from either krunner or in a konsole) resolves those issues. I noticed you are using libModemManagerQt, does this mean you are using plasma-nm as well ? It would be good however if you could start ModemManager from a console in such a way that output is shown there.
