You issue a "rug ref". it says "waking up zmd", causing it to refresh all sources. then it refreshes all sources again, because you told it so. because it takes the better part of one hour, you run it in a screen session, so you detach and get something else done. when you attach to your screen to do "rug lu", zmd is asleep again, so you detach again (see above). when you attach again to do "rug up", zmd is asleep again.
