https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=441307 Summary: nvidia repository must be updated or closed Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hochglanz@googlemail.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: --- In several documents openSuSE / Novell propose to use the opensuse nVIDIA repository on http://donwload.nvidia.com to install the nVIDIA drivers. This is misleading, because a) the repository must be adapted to the current kernel (which is not) b) never includes - critical - updates like the 177.80 update, which is a MUST for KDE4 users. in the forum most people advice to forget the repos and install the drivers via the nVIDIA run script. Altough it's possible it's not a good way, because this script will install every libraries in /usr/lib instead of /usr/lib/X11R6 like the openSuSE packages - which can lead (in worst case) into problems when linking self-compiled programs. speeking shortly: please update the openSuSE nvidia repository -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is misleading, because a) the repository must be adapted to the current kernel (which is not)
I do not understand why. We are not aware of any kABI breakage of any 11.0 update kernel.
b) never includes - critical - updates like the 177.80 update, which is a MUST for KDE4 users.
This is more or less impossible, since 177.80 drops the support for a lot of graphics chip (anything belower GeForce 6xxx), so updating to this driver would result in a desaster for many users. At least there is some hope for openSUSE 11.1, so that the situation for KDE4 will improve for the future.
