[Bug 960241] New: KDE desktop missing mandatory X11 dependencies
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=960241 Bug ID: 960241 Summary: KDE desktop missing mandatory X11 dependencies Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation Assignee: yast2-maintainers@suse.de Reporter: arnold.mesper@yandex.com QA Contact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- When installing the KDE desktop without recommends the required X11 packages are missing, thus graphical mode is not possible. To me it looks like the required X11 packages are marked as recommended instead of mandatory. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #5 from Arnold Mesper
Someone that first does a very basic (non-graphical) installation, switches off the "Install Recommends" option in YaST is on his own. The patterns are using recommends so that the user can still make certain selections.
As far as I can see the package patterns-openSUSE-x11 is not installed by default, if I select a minimal text mode only system (with recommends switched on). So a non-graphical installation should not be affected in any way by the settings in patterns-openSUSE-x11.
The openSUSE patterns are working based on recommending packages to be installed. The patterns-openSUSE-x11 is the one that recommends the xserver package and everything that belongs to a graphical workstation. This is one of the base packages that are installed by default and therefore the KDE patterns do not explicitly require the xserver.
Yes, KDE does not need to explicitly require the xserver, as - even without recommends - the patterns-openSUSE-x11 is installed by default. I will change the title of the issue, as this might be misleading. The problem is that the patterns-openSUSE-x11 does not mandate the software required to install X11. It only recommends it, which IMHO does not make sens. To make the problem even more clear: If you select a to install a minimal X-window system without recommends you get no X11-related software installed. I do not think this is the behavior users would expect. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
