[Bug 732902] New: [12.1] GTK YaST Software Manager has unreadable black sections

I am using it on XFCE with the Industrial theme. Please see the attached picture. This is a serious usability problem. Thanks a lot! Could we change the severity of this to "normal"?
I usually like to keep UI bugs as "minor" because it makes it easier to search for them. (Crashes as normal, data loss as major, etc, it's defined in the docs.) We already have the "priority" field to rank bugs by importance. But it's fine whatever way. Anyhow, there are a couple of major bugs from the gnome3 and gtk3 transition. I am trying to convince them to drop yast2-gtk. It doesn't make sense to spend my time fixing those bugs when yast3 is right around the corner. And Qt can mimic Gtk pretty well now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=732902 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=732902#c5 --- Comment #5 from Ankleface Wroughtlandmire <bummmm@mailinator.com> 2011-11-28 02:52:39 UTC --- I normally don't care much about the appearance of GTK vs. QT. But I do strongly prefer the GTK version of the software manager, the design is much cleaner and more logical compared to its QT counterpart, and it has some nice features like the instant search and multiple select that the QT version lacks. So I'd appreciate any tips to make a quick hack. Could I change the CSS files of the GTK3 theme or something? Thanks in advance for your time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As you pointed out, gtk software management has some distinct advantages I quickly got used to, so I will have to wait until this issue is solved before upgrading my other systems. Another observation: The issue does not occur when logging into the 12.1 box from a system running 11.4. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is it a GTK2 problem, or a GTK3 problem, or an Xorg problem? Pango? CSS of YaST theme? I would really appreciate some pointers. My wild guess is that Xfce does not set any GTK+3 theme (logically, as Xfce uses GTK+2) and so GTK+3 applications, including YaST, fall back to the default, extra ugly and unreadable theme. If my hypothesis is correct, this might be worked around by installing Gnome3 temporarily and use its theme selector to pick a more usable theme. With some luck, this will get stored and used even outside of Gnome. Funny thing is that when opensuse 12.1 was released I have downloaded livecd to check if it is my configuration problem (this time clean install with reformatted home partition) or some distro problem. And livecd Gnome preview had also this bug. A few days ago I reported a bug with the presentation of the problem on regional opensuse forum, and after receiving some advice I downloaded the livecd again. This time background was white. So maybe some link is missing? I agree with #5 and #7. Qt version is not usable for me. It lacks basic functionality like live search and quick summary of pending updates. This bug was not present within Gnome. But outside of Gnome this bug showed up. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be just a GTK3 theme problem. I have since tweaked my XFCE theme, and now GTK3 apps like YaST follow the GTK3 theme. But the black background is still present.
