[Bug 726776] New: accountservice: account type admin doesn't make sense
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726776 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726776#c0 Summary: accountservice: account type admin doesn't make sense Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lnussel@suse.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- the user account edit dialog offers a setting to set an account to type "Administrator", however no such thing exists on openSUSE. accountservices uses membership in the group 'wheel' to decide whether an account is admin or not. The wheel group has no special meaning on openSUSE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

My understanding is that we just don't want such a group. Is this right? FWIW, this is how it's used on Fedora: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43226#c5 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm just stating the facts as I know them in this report. Historically defining a meaning of the wheel group is left to the admin in SUSE. If anyone wants to give the wheel group (or preferably a group with a different name) a special meaning please feel free to come up with a proposal. A change like that needs to fit into a bigger picture IMO. For example I'd be happy if we had some way to tell e.g. whether a user potentially knows the root password or whether the user doesn't. In the latter case some config options could just be disabled instead of annoying users with authentication popups in the first place. I guess that's not the way the wheel group is interpreted on Fedora though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Vuntz: Do you have that patch by any chance? I guess we should also try to do a maintenance update for this one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Granted, without the local admin doing more work, the setting does make a difference. And it would be simple enough to remove the option from the drop down dialog, if that's consensus... At the cost that we will carry a patch for like *ever* I'm very much inclined to closing this bug as 'WORKSFORME' (there is no option 'NOTABUG') Comments anybody? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726776 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=726776#c6 --- Comment #6 from Vincent Untz <vuntz@suse.com> 2012-07-02 07:30:20 UTC --- So, yeah, upstream isn't keen on adding API for this. I don't think we want to patch accountsservice to add additional API only for us to determine if there's such an account type. So I guess, for now, I'd go the simple way and simply disable the admin account type in accountsservice (ACCOUNT_TYPE_ADMINISTRATOR in the code) and hide it from g-c-c. That means two patches to carry on forever, though... :/ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
