[Bug 419887] New: opensuse-11.1 hotplug automount of ntfs fails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=419887 Summary: opensuse-11.1 hotplug automount of ntfs fails Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Alpha 2 Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lee_matheson@hotmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User Created an attachment (id=235147) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=235147) Error message observed when inserting USB cable for NTFS formated external drive OpenSUSE-11.1 alpha2 hotplug automount of an NTFS formatted external hard drive with a USB-2 interface failed. The problem is the (simple) work around noted below is above the capabilities of most openSUSE Linux newbies, and hence this is not very user friendly. Most LARGE external hard drives that one purchases today are formated as NTFS and hence it is important this capability be provided with minimal fuss. PC Configuration: KDE-3.5.9 "release-78" on OpenSUSE-11.1 alpha2. Upon inserting the USB cable for a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB USB external hard drive (formated in NTFS), an appropriate dialog box popped up (Free Agent KDE Daemon), offering selection to "Open New Window". Upon selecting "Open New Windows" a konqueror dialog box pops up "Error-Konqueror" with the error: "mount: wrong fs type, bd option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so". Then selecting "OK" results in no hard drive access (no read, nor write). This is similar to the anomalous behaviour observed in openSUSE-11.0. The very simple workaround is per the guidance here: http://en.opensuse.org/NTFS-3g#External_HD_hotplug_bug_in_openSUSE_11.0 which is to disconnect the external USB drive, and then type in a konsole: cd /sbin sudo ln -s mount.ntfs-3g mount.ntfs at which point in time if the external NTFS USB drive is inserted, the drive is hot plug automounted correctly with read/write capabilities with the NTFS-3G driver. However it is recommend that consideration be given to fixing this bug, as the above work around will be difficult for newbies to openSUSE, and NTFS formatted external hard drives are becoming increasingly common place. I made the severity "minor" due to the simplicity of the work around, and the effectiveness of the workaround. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
