[Bug 429132] New: After upgrade, DNS does not work (dhcp problem ?!)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429132 Summary: After upgrade, DNS does not work (dhcp problem ?!) Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kkaempf@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- After doing a 11.0->11.1beta1 upgrade, name resolving does not work. I had to manually edit /etc/sysconfig/network/config and enter values for NETCONFIG_DNS_STATIC_SEARCHLIST and NETCONFIG_DNS_STATIC_SERVERS. Apparently, dhcp is only able to retrieve the IP address but not the DNS values. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

In the office somehow the dns is working and the /etc/resolv.conf gets updated. The only difference that I can think off is that I am using the search domain from the office. However at home I do not get a correct DNS settings whether I am using ifup or NetworkManager. I tried to use wired and wireless, but both ends up in the same situation. No DNS entries. NetworkManager is reporting that the DNS is 192.168.0.1, however this is not being reflected in the /etc/resolv.conf. If I logged on to the office network, then the /etc/resolv.conf contains all the settings from the office and not the ones from the new network. If I run netconfig update -v then i have the following output: localhost:~ # netconfig update -v debug: lockfile created (/var/run/netconfig.pid) for PID 3978 debug: lockfile created debug: Module order: dns-resolver dns-bind ntp-runtime nis debug: dns-resolver Plugin called debug: Use NetworkManager policy merged settings debug: exec get_dns_settings: /var/run/netconfig//NetworkManager.netconfig debug: exit get_dns_settings debug: dns-bind Plugin called debug: ntp-runtime Plugin called debug: Use NetworkManager policy merged settings debug: exec get_ntp_settings: /var/run/netconfig//NetworkManager.netconfig debug: exit get_ntp_settings debug: nis Plugin called debug: Use NetworkManager policy merged settings debug: exec get_nis_settings: /var/run/netconfig//NetworkManager.netconfig debug: exit get_nis_settings debug: format_yp_conf called with : debug: current domain is ; given domain is debug: domain matches ... set empty debug: No changes for /etc/yp.conf The contents of NetworkManager.netconfig is : localhost:~ # cat /var/run/netconfig/NetworkManager.netconfig CREATETIME='1222323173' SERVICE='NetworkManager' INTERFACE='eth1' DNSSERVERS='192.168.0.1' I will attach the diverse configuration files to this one. The problem is in the helper script for netconfig. => dns-resolver. Everything in this scripts goes fine, until the moment of writing the /etc/resolv.conf is there. The function checks if the first parameter is a non-empty field. function write_resolv_conf() { test -z "$1" && return 1 # # empty nameserver is a valid value # #test -z "$2" && return 1 However this function is called with : write_resolv_conf "$DNS_SEARCHLIST" "$DNS_SERVERS" RET=$? This means that if there is no DNS_SEARCHLIST defined by the DHCP server, the dns-resolver will skip the writing of the /etc/resolv.conf as that the first parameter for the write-config function is empty. I believe that we should check if both parameters are empty or not !! When I changed the check to `test -z "$1" && test -z "$2" && return 1` everything is working as expected !! However I am not 100% sure if this is the correct solution to this issue. Thanks! I think, the correct way is to remote this check. The second parameter (nameserver list) is optional because empty in forwarder configurations and we have IMO also to reset the file when there is not nameserver at all (neither static nor provided by dns). The first parameter is optional, because it is perhaps not provided by the dhcp server or statically (defaults is the domain from gethostname call; see man 5 resolv.conf). I'll disable the empty search list check and submit a new package soon. I'm still fixing a problem with detection if user modified the file, ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
