[Bug 1156537] New: kernel BUG at fs/ext4/inode.c:2721 and process stuck in D state
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1156537 Bug ID: 1156537 Summary: kernel BUG at fs/ext4/inode.c:2721 and process stuck in D state Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE Factory Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: alarrosa@suse.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Recently I've had a couple of cases of processes stucking in D state thus forcing me reboot my system and lose some work since once it was X itself and this morning it's a konsole process with some tabs opened. This morning I looked in the dmesg output and found what is probably the source of the problem: [344057.365237] kernel BUG at fs/ext4/inode.c:2721! [344057.365244] invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] SMP PTI (I attach the full debug output from dmesg related to this) This is currently happening with kernel 5.3.8 (Linux trantor 5.3.8-1-default #1 SMP Wed Oct 30 07:12:05 UTC 2019 (ea4c828) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) but I think it also happened in previous kernels. I searched the logs and found: # journalctl --system --since "2 months ago" | grep kernel\ BUG Nov 08 00:21:20 trantor kernel: kernel BUG at fs/ext4/inode.c:2721! Nov 12 11:13:02 trantor kernel: kernel BUG at fs/ext4/inode.c:2721! I think I had also other cases before that one on the 8th of November, but I only have logs since Nov 03 since I had a case of log flood by an issue with the usb port of my UPS :( (for which I have a workaround and no fix, but that's unrelated to this issue). # last reboot reboot system boot 5.3.8-1-default Fri Nov 8 11:38 still running reboot system boot 5.3.7-1-default Fri Nov 8 10:57 - 11:38 (00:40) reboot system boot 5.3.7-1-default Fri Nov 8 10:48 - 10:49 (00:00) reboot system boot 5.3.7-1-default Fri Nov 8 10:37 - 10:37 (00:00) reboot system boot 5.3.7-1-default Mon Nov 4 16:26 - 10:37 (3+18:11) reboot system boot 5.3.7-1-default Mon Nov 4 16:06 - 16:25 (00:19) reboot system boot 5.3.6-1-default Sun Oct 27 10:21 - 16:25 (8+06:04) reboot system boot 5.3.6-1-default Wed Oct 23 17:56 - 10:20 (3+17:24) reboot system boot 5.3.5-1-default Wed Oct 23 17:48 - 17:56 (00:07) reboot system boot 5.3.5-1-default Mon Oct 21 09:10 - 17:56 (2+08:45) So it seems the problem started at least with kernel 5.3.7, but it might have been there from before, probably since 5.3.x. At least, I'm pretty sure that I didn't have any such issue with 5.2.x . Note that after the first reboot in Nov 8 I checked some of the filesystems and found nothing wrong (only some optimizations that could be applied, and I did). Also, none of the filesystems in this machine was full, and even the bug at Nov 08 00:21 happened with virtually no workload on the system, except maybe for logrotate (or some service like that, I checked at least my backup service and fstrim were not running at that time). If there's any other information that can help, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll reboot now and check all filesystems again. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
