From the letter thread I figured out that the problem is solves upstream in the version zlib-1.2.5-r2 (while we have in Factory only zlib-1.2.3).

Depending on various defines, the check fails through. Reworked the patch on zlib and tested it against libxml2/x86_64 (my previous test case, segfaulted on x86_64) and KDE:KDE3/pdfedit/i586, as reported in this bug. With the current zlib fix just submitted to Archiving, both test cases pass. SR: 48741. I'll keep the bug open until zlib arrives in Factory again.
