[Bug 263864] New: Partition on disk is not readable by the partitioning tool parted
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263864 Summary: Partition on disk is not readable by the partitioning tool parted Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fweber@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com When I try to install openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 3, the following message appears at the System Probing dialog (System Analysis -> Search for Linux partitions): "The partitioning on disk /dev/sda is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table. You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda as they are. You can format them and asign mount points to them, but you cannot add, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool." However I can resize, delete, ... the disk on this computer with the repair tool of SLED 10. The computer is a IBM Thinkpad R40. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Therefore the new installation sees a partition (/dev/sda3) that is larger than the whole disk. This of course makes it impossible to use this partition Please attach also the content of directory /var/log/YaST2 from your old installation so that we can compare the two installations. Additonally the output of "dmesg" after system boot would be helpful since it contains the messages the kernel prints during hardware detection. For the 10.3 Alpha3 install this could be generated after booted into the rescue system. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Just start the repair tool of SLED10 (you need not change anything) and provide me the content of /var/log/YaST2 after the repair tool displays the partition table (you need to press Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get to a shell) The data of the dmesg command for old kernel can also be generated by calling dmesg on ubuntu (AFAIK they also have dmesg). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

With SLED 10 it has 3648 cylinders, otherwise only 3289. Likely due to some Host Protected Area. Besides the problem that YaST cannot partition the disk the partition will also be unusable after an update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263864 teheo@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW Info Provider|teheo@novell.com | ------- Comment #11 from teheo@novell.com 2007-04-24 07:13 MST ------- Yeah, there is. IDE driver automatically unlocks HPA (host protected area) during detection and recognize the device at its native size ignoring artificial limit set by the BIOS. Way back, HPA was sometimes used to protect OS which can't deal with large disks and that's one of the reasons why IDE chose to unlock HPA by default. More common usage of HPA is recovery area used by BIOS - usually contains some type of standalone recovery program which can write an image to disk to restore factory default installation. That's why you see different size. HPA support is currently being worked on in libata devel tree and will be merged during 2.6.22-rc1 cycle. Even then, it's an optional feature and the default is to honor BIOS limit. It's unavoidable because changing the default means breaking backward compatibility with previous versions of libata. It's one of the two road blocks in migrating to libata - this and partition number limit. I think we should and will include HPA support in 10.3 but I dunno what the default should be. Hmmm... Ignoring BIOS setting always results in longer not shorter device, so everything should just work albeit with extra unpartitioned chunk at the end of the disk. So, I think we can just enable it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I'm going to assign this one to you for checking/changing the default when we merge 2.6.22-rc1 into the HEAD kernel. It doesn't require any action now. Florian - Sorry we don't have a better answer now, but I guess that's one of the caveats of using an Alpha release. Resolving this one. As a side note, one remaining obstacle in ide -> libata transition is reduced minor device number space (fewer partitions supported). I don't think this will be resolved before SL103 or SLE11. In fact, I'm not sure whether this will be addressed at all. Would this be a major problem? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263864 ------- Comment #15 from fehr@novell.com 2007-06-13 04:00 MST ------- So far there is no plan to resolve the problem with the fewer supported partitions at all. If the customer has a disk with more than 15 partitions we tell him at install time he needs to use his old operating system to consolidate the disk so that it does not have more than 15 partitions. I think for 10.3 there will be also the alternative to use the older IDE driver that still supports 64 partitions but this option will go away after 10.3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
