Thunderbird is fully operational, Firefox came up with something that looks like a clean profile (no bookmarks nor addons; my backup of this machine has failed, so I cannot check if it really is a new profile. Previously, renaming the profile and starting Firefox didn't help.) I didn't update anything Mozilla related.
