[Bug 377441] New: Boot Option "Failsafe" is meaningless to users
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=377441 Summary: Boot Option "Failsafe" is meaningless to users Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer I was demoing OpenSuse to a few friends, strictly users and at the Boot option menu many asked what the meaning of "FailSafe' Boot Option and all the lines 'of code' that appeared at the bottom when this option was selected. I was really stuck for an answer to satisfy a general user. Indeed we have in many ways forgotten about the user here. In version 11.0 could be possibly change this boot option to something that has meaning to a user. After all, is that not our intent, to create an easy to use interface that a user is happy to use and understand. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The way it is presented a user could interoperate Fail-safe Mode as MS Windows 'Safe Mode' which has many user options and offers far far more functionality that our Fail-safe. In a MS Environment Safe Mode is only accessible to the user when the MS O/S is really stuffed up. We do NOT want to consider drawing any parallels to the MS Safe Mode OR vast Advanced install options available from any MS O/S and application Setup options. By all means keep the name, however move it off the main menu to a function Key. There is far far to many user options after boot from Install Media. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I fully agree that the 'floppy' option is pointless. And the usefulness of 'failsafe' is IMO at least questionable. The problem with the above proposal (to put options into separate menu) is, that it does not work if you turn off the graphical boot menu. Personally I have difficulties in explaining the difference between Rescue and Repair. Logically I have problems with the whole of the above. Bug #419464 is restricted and its reference is not helpful. I think the Boot from CD requires a most deliberate course of logic between many people and if this is difficult or delicate then all the more reason for change. 1. QA - Could you please change the title of this bug to be Rationalization of Boot from CD Menu 2. Could you please resolve this issue by undertaking to put it firmly on the agenda for Functional Change rather than enhance or bug fix. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think the task ahead of us all is to create and improve the default boot and in doing so start to remove boot options 1 by 1 from the vast list that appears to get bigger not smaller. This involves changes to the Default Kernel and boot Loader and depend and modules. We have got to busy in fragmenting it rather than the other way around. I think we need a larger forum in this respect. We need to appreciate how technical excellence has nothing to do with user acceptance and we have held on to the old school tie of Keeping Linux only for the high technical mind and creating a Club of members who need to sign their email and ideas with their club badge number. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
