[Bug 430925] New: Major Problems with Network Traffic from the Default " Site is used as a Domain Name of the PC
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=430925 Summary: Major Problems with Network Traffic from the Default "Site is used as a Domain Name of the PC Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer ########### QA - Sorry uncertain on clasification of Yast or KDE ############ In particular in Home or SMB Networks the Domain Name field in YAST>NETWORK SERVICES>NETWORK DEVICES .is never changed from the default SITE - This is either because they do not operate with a local DNS Server host or their own Web Server and mo email associated with a Domain Name component.
From memory we auto Generate the Host Name, but we leave SITE as default.
If the Network is connected from Hardware Modem/Router/Switch we just plug in each PC's Ethernet card. It starts to be come an issue when the user uses NAT to change 1 IP onto Many IPs. Traffic analysis shows multiple/multiple dropped packets that cannot find their destination - because the PC is defined by both an IP and SITE as a domain. This becomes only evident when the user turns on NAT to convert a 1 to many IP and back again to an ISP. Another reminder is if a MS Windoze is setup on the same route a warning message is issues "duplicate address" despite the IP being unique on the netmask of both. Windoze sees the IP and the DN as == If you need me to setup traffic log to show you - please advise - Otherwise can we use the same smarts we use in auto creation of the Host Name or can we just remove its mandatory flag please. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I was researching this bug for a client before coming to you and concede it is not a bug but one of interest. I have re-constructed the following. The bug presents itself in the following Home Network where an OpenSuse PC is NOT providing services to the whole LAN. Under the following Network Config the Modem CANNOT resole the Domain Search Field where the default 'site' is inherited and IP's are statically assigned. See Attached Here the Modem is sent traffic from all PC's to the DNS IP's and if unresolved is sent the Domain Name Search of 'site' as the field 'Update DNS Data via DHCP' is OFF. The modem will receive instructions to resolve the Domain Name 'Site' if the DNS Services of the IP's becomes flaky. The more flaky the normal DNS IP's becomes, the more errors are sent and the Modem will ultimately not recover normal IP's resolution - especially where all the PC are sending 'site' to be resolved. Internet | | | Modem/Router/Switch/NAT'ed | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | PC PC PC OpenSuse-F-S/P-S I am not that click happy with bug reports but concede I should have reconstructed first ;-( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
