[Bug 715605] New: Sound not working in KDE4
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715605#c0 Summary: Sound not working in KDE4 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@suse.com ReportedBy: n5xwb@comcast.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:8.0a1) Gecko/20110708 Firefox/8.0a1 Simply as a "user" call up KDE4 in runlevel 3 (startx) (not 5) and do nothing. As it comes up or down it will play a small short tune as it come up and goes down. This does assume that yast2>Hardware>Sound has been set and the levels are up. Once complete do the same thing in root. Note that KDE4s short music plays while coming up. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.In run level 3 use startx as a user 2.as KDE4 comes up there is no sound and Multimedia shows nothing but Dummy 3.Now try it as root - it will work Actual Results: As a user the sound fails. As root it works So Amarok, anything TV or flash fails to work as a user. It worked in 11.4 12.1 3 and fails in 12.1 5. Expected Results: As a user in runlevel 3 I would expect the sound to work on things like Kmix, gamix, amarok, tvtime, kradio and anything with flash audio. And that KDE4 was be able to play it start/stop sounds. I have changed dsp, mixer, and audio to 666 from 660 to allow apps to use it I have set it up in yast2>Hardware>Sound and a reasonable level again it works as root but not as a user. I have run SuSEconfig looking for permissions error. I have made sure the user was added to /etc/group/audio -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After the update from 11.4 i have no sound with kde. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715605#c2 --- Comment #2 from Donald Donn Washburn <n5xwb@comcast.net> 2011-09-19 20:15:14 UTC --- I now have sound with KDE as normal. To do it I had to set /dev dsp, mixer* and audio to 666 from 660. Because all of the apps that play music or make sounds are part of "other". So "user" and "owner" was not enough to work even on KDE. Plus make sure "pulse-audio" is off using Yast2>Hardware>Sound <alt>e (as I remember). If you have a TV card and NVidia it will not work with nouveau. They work just fine with an NV.run -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's a well-known issue of device permission in runlevel 3. These device permissions are supposed to be set dynamically via ACL through ConsoleKit, but runlevel 3 doesn't invoke CK as default. If you want to use such devices from runlevel 3, either add "audio" group to user or try pam_ck_connector. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715605#c4 --- Comment #4 from Donald Donn Washburn <n5xwb@comcast.net> 2011-09-20 12:50:26 UTC --- I always use runlevel 3 going back to SCO and Xenix. I have added the user to /etc/group and added permission.local a line /dev/dsp root.audio 666 and others. However, the app reading permission local always misses permission.*. I will look into pam_ck_connector. It seems all locate finds is /lib64/security/pam_ck_connector.so. I am looking in man 8 now. I do have the sound working. However nothing seems to remember the past volume level. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
