[Bug 231218] New: following Yast online update of kernel system hung during reboot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231218 Summary: following Yast online update of kernel system hung during reboot Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: pmmt.inc@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de following a Yast online update of the kernel the system hung during a reboot. it appears to be a kernel panic, but I don't have any details. this has happened twice. the first time I upgraded the kernel and a couple of additional packages. (I was able to restore the system with a knoppix liveCD and a backup of the root and /var partitions.) the second time this happened I upgraded only the kernel. the kernel upgrade was: Patch: Kernel Update for SUSE Linux 10.1 Source Timestamp: 2006/12/13 09:34:50 UTC CVS Branch: SLES10_GA_BRANCH packages: kernel-smp kernel-source mkinitrd udev I'm not in a big hurry to make my system inoperable again, but if it would help I would be willing to reinstall the patch, if you can provide me with instructions on how to get the information you need. btw, the hardware is x86-64 as previously specified, but it's dual core (if it makes any difference). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

A digital picture is also ok, if you can do that. I don't have, and haven't tried, the 10.2 release. I would be happy to collect the kernel panic, but most of it seems to scroll off screen. Is the portion that remains on screen enough, or is there a way to collect the 'full' output after the kernel panics? I boot in failsafe mode to see the kernel panic. Is there a better way? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The crucial problem might be an oops during a call to "modprobe generic". I have attached an additional picture showing the corresponding kernel messages. Please note that I will have only network access to this machine during the next few weeks. Hence, I probably can't help a lot in debugging this problem further. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231218 teheo@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|ASSIGNED |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED ------- Comment #11 from teheo@novell.com 2007-01-30 22:17 MST ------- This bug was introduced with the patch to fix #207939. The ported patch was incomplete in that it contained pci_device_id entries for JMB controllers but no generic_chipsets[] entry for added devices. This causes generic to reference beyond generic_chipsets[] array when JMB controllers are present. On a good day, it's all null and probing silently fails. On a bad day, it's an oops. The attached patch does the followings. 1. add respective generic_chipsets[] entries for JMB controllers. 2. fix init_one() to avoid disabling JMB368 incorrectly. The patch is tested on JMB363 and 368 controllers and also has been in upstream for quite some time. This fix is critical as the kernel might oops on all machines which have JMB controllers with PATA port present. Patch is committed to SLES10_GA_BRANCH. Mike, the next update shouldn't have the problem and give you access to PATA ports on your JMicron controller.
