[Bug 210931] New: When using in VMWare sometimes Kernel Panic when booting
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210931 Summary: When using in VMWare sometimes Kernel Panic when booting Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: madjari@inode.at QAContact: qa@suse.de Sometimes (I cannot pinpoint what's the difference between when this problem occurs and when it doesn't) when booting the VM, I get a Kernel Panic message. Host Operating System is SuSE 10.1 with Stock Kernel, VMWare is 5.5.2. I can provide a Screenshot (png-File) with the detailed screen contents of the kernel panic message. I retype the last two lines here: EIP: [<c0124a6d>] cpu_callback+0x45/0x238 SS:ESP 0068:c14a3f84 <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

And I also set back the Product to openSUSE 10.2. The problem seems to be associated with opensuse 10.2 - it's the client OS within the VM that crashes. The host OS (10.1) is stable and fine, as is VMWare itself. I get this problem within openSUSE 10.2 every two out of three boots of the virtual machine (which is why I was able to append a screenshot of the kernel panic message). I'll check what the people at VMWare will have to say about this problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Perhaps it has something to do with the virtualization extension Vanderpool of the Pentium D? No problems with other OSs like suse10.1 or winXP. If the Pentium D is under heavy load, the chance is greater that the boot succeeds. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
