[Bug 392406] New: software.o.o/www.o.o: Add metalinks for downloading openSUSE
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=392406 Summary: software.o.o/www.o.o: Add metalinks for downloading openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Download Infrastructure AssignedTo: poeml@novell.com ReportedBy: poeml@novell.com QAContact: adrian@novell.com CC: fs@novell.com, abauer@novell.com, aj@novell.com, coolo@novell.com, cthiel@novell.com, stbinner@novell.com, rlihm@novell.com Found By: --- The redirector on download.opensuse.org became a metalink generator recently, and therefore we should add metalinks as recommended download method. Metalinks are the best way to make sure that our users can download the large images without worrying about * mirrors * integrity checking * large file support of their operating system which they had *a lot* of trouble with in the past, including 10.3 release. See http://en.opensuse.org/Metalink for more information. There are at least three platform-independent metalink clients that can be recommended: - DownThemAll, a Firefox extension - Retriever, a graphical Java client - aria2c, a commandline client Newer versions of KGet also support metalinks. Note that Metalinks can also include Bittorrent sources, which our metalinks don't do yet, but that's planned to be implemented soon. Thus, metalinks have the same advantages as Bittorrent P2P downloading. Thus, we should add metalinks as recommended download method to software.opensuse.org and the wiki. So far, metalinks to ISOs are listed only here: * http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Download_Released_Version_Table (which is included in http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version) They are mentioned at least here: * http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version * http://en.opensuse.org/Download_Help * http://en.opensuse.org/Metalink (also redirected from http://en.opensuse.org/Metalinks) * http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service/Redirector Metalinks are *not* here yet: * http://software.opensuse.org/ and http://software.opensuse.org/developer * http://en.opensuse.org/Download * http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Download_Development_Version_Table and http://en.opensuse.org/Template:Download_Development_Deltas_Table (included in http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version) As I'm having a hard time to find my way through the many "download" pages, I'm likely missing some other places. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It is a bit cryptic though because that's just the plain 11.0 Apache autoindex page. It would be even better to have metalinks on par with the other links, as another download method. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
