[Bug 211857] New: access to floppy is very slow
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211857 Summary: access to floppy is very slow Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: ihno@novell.com ReportedBy: timmi@gmx-topmail.de QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: timmi@gmx-topmail.de The access to my floppy is very slow, independently if working on X or on the console. The floppy behaves exactly like describes in bug 105871 for 10.0. However USB sticks work fine. Is bug 105871 only fixed for USB sticks and not for floppies? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The real problem is that the file system is mounted with -osync. It may not seem obvious, but this is a duplicate of bug 230737. VFAT file systems need to be marked as -oflush when used with removable media. The problem is that -osync is ridiculously slow, while mounting with -oasync doesn't ensure that the file system is entirely flushed. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 230737 *** -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

(Comment 26). So this seems not to be a duplicate. And in 10.3 alpha 4 the bug is not solved. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211857#c7 Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |mike_wells@cox.net --- Comment #7 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-08-05 08:33:30 MST --- In addition to extremely slow access (r/w) it would appear (at least on my 2 machines) that the 'sync' option under the mount command has NO effect (this was not the case in 9.3). I am running 10.2 GM x86(i386) and x86-64 and the 'fstab' entries are identical "/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto, user, sync 0 0". Directory conflict arises between KDE 'system:/media (floppy)' and '/media/floppy' because the floppy drive is NOT being accessed for each and every operation and the two are not kept in sync. Therefore, if files are removed from the floppy via '/media/floppy' they will still show up in 'system:/media (floppy)' as a result of caching instead of the FAT being accessed on the floppy like it should be. BTW, it took over 5 minutes to write a 365KB text file to floppy via Console. Can not even be done via KDE due to stalling and the transfer rate starting extremely low and going lower until stalling again. This behavior exhibits itself (via the file transfer window) on each and every write operation where the file size is bigger than a grain of sand! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211857#c12 --- Comment #12 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-11-23 02:42:33 MST --- I do believe Mario that the problem actually reared its ugly head in 10.0. 9.3 was the last version where we had a "working" floppy. I feared for the worst and was actually afraid to even try my floppy in 10.3. My fears did not go unwarranted. Same problem. Over 2 minutes to xfer a 102KB file (with stalling most of the way). Gentlemen; a floppy (although on the decline) is and always has been a part of basic PC functionality. Up until just recently EVERY machine came with one. There are certain basic functionalities that we have come to expect and also require; video, keyboard, mouse, floppy and the ability to print. Doing without these bare minimums (that have been in existence since the dawn of the PC) in this day and age with relation to PC life would seem almost archaic. openSUSE in my opinion is the finest distro available (I have been "here" since 9.1) but when we get overly concerned with being Number 1 and donate all of our resources and efforts to "feature rich" versus basic functionality we have lost sight of just what all of this is about. I implore you to rethink your priorities in the scheme of things. All the "whistles and bells" do not do any of us a whole lot of good if we do not have the basics. As of 10.3 I am still without a "useable" floppy. Please excuse me if I sound harsh but this is totally unacceptable by todays standards in any PC OS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211857#c13 --- Comment #13 from Mike Wells <mike_wells@cox.net> 2007-11-23 16:26:39 MST --- With regard to comment #11; I executed 3 tests for a recursive copy (4 folders, 22 tiny files, 102KB total). The tests were KDE/Konqueror, KDE/Konsole and Linux Native (dropping down into Console Login as root). The results were identical for all 3 tests - well over 2 minutes for a total data xfer of 102KB! So, it puzzles Mario, as to how you were able to come up with normal xfer speed under GNOME. At any rate this entire floppy issue (and the numerous bugs associated with it) is just flat out unacceptable even by legacy standards! I use the word "legacy" because that now seems to be the new "fad" term with respect to 3.5"/1.44MB internal drives being used by the SUSE people. I have been "doing" PC's since 1982 and I am here to tell you that this one takes the cake in all of the cake walks that I have ever seen. The 3.5" internal is not yet "legacy". If that is a SUSE "workaround" for not seeing this thru then it will be just one more example of their new attitude which seems to be "Live with it"! BTW, I just happen to own a fairly expensive Sony digital cam and in addition to mem sticks it can take a 3.5" floppy for removable storage. How 'bout that? And guess what Gents? My Sony cam is NOT legacy! Whatever happened to stability, reliablity, usability and basic functionality with this distro? Oh, I just remembered, all of that went out the window in favor of cramming some barely usable KDE 4 previews on the 10.3 DVD iso. But hey, who needs a working floppy, the ability to print (I can't in 10.3), or the best one of all; can not boot to "Repair installed system" from the installation media when we can have borked KDE 4 previews. Enough said. I'm going shopping again! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
