[Bug 435791] New: Strange artefacts with radeon dualhead
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=435791 Summary: Strange artefacts with radeon dualhead Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- radeon dualhead, laptop display 1400x1050 + external TFT 1280x1024 The external TFT has two triangles where the picture looks broken. In the lower-left corner, the background image is simply cut off. Between the middle and the right of the bottom border, there's another funny triangle repeating pixels. The problem is not limited to my user account, it is even visible in SaX2's configuration preview mode. Interestingly the content of these two triangles somewhat corresponds to the screen content. When I move around the window or the mouse pointer, the right triangles also looks different and repeats the pixels above. The left one behaves like a black hole and simply hides everything - but it still seems to reuse some part of the screen because it is blue in SaX2 configuration preview. See the attached screen photo which shows the bottom-left (about 2/3 of the width) of my external TFT. (The screen photo was taken with a camera because KSnapshot returns an image of a perfect screen.) Note: This is the same system as in bug 435178, but with a fresh xorg.conf (RightOf layout). I'm quite sure this is a different bug because it has very different symptoms. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

A final question: can this bug destroy my display or is it "only" an optical problem?
Your monitor just displays what the hardware feeds it, so there is no danger there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

option "XaaNoImageWriteRect" "True" Fixes it it seems, so calls to this acceleration breaks things.
I still see the problem with this option added to xorg.conf. I'm attaching the xorg.conf I used to test this - please have a short look at it to exclude "silly user" (as in "added to wrong section", "typo" etc.) as the reason why the problem still appears. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Created an attachment (id=246647) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=246647) [details] working xorg.conf
I finally created a working xorg.conf. I'm attaching it in case you want to compare it with the previous one.
The difference between the 2 config files can easily be described: "PreferredMode" has been set from 1440x1050 to 1280x1024 for one monitor. Now both monitors have the same preferred mode. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

No, they don't - I swapped the PreferredMode settings because they were wrong before. # grep PreferredMode xorg.conf Option "SaXExternal" "Identifier&EXT+DisplaySize&376 301+VendorName&--> VESA+LeftOf&Monitor[0]+PreferredMode&1280x1024+HorizSync&31-70+ModelName&1280X1024@75HZ+VertRefresh&50-75" Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024" <--- external TFT # Option "PreferredMode" "1400x1050" <--- (commented out) # Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024" <--- (commented out) Option "PreferredMode" "1400x1050" <--- laptop display Before this change, my external TFT had a PreferredMode of 1400x1050 which was reduced to the 1280x1024 pixels the hardware provides. And the laptop display was blurry because it had to scale up 1280x1024 to 1400x1050. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
