[Bug 211379] New: kdebase3/kinfocenter adds too many individual items to the xdg menu
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211379 Summary: kdebase3/kinfocenter adds too many individual items to the xdg menu Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de QAContact: qa@suse.de There is this kinfocenter application in the kdebase3 package which is a collection of many individual modules: - Interrupts - X-Server - OpenGL - PCI etc. The modules seem to be collected from .desktop files which causes them to appear as individual menu items in all desktop environments. Having just the kinfocenter application as a single menu entry instead of all the individual items would be much nicer IMHO. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

This is just for demonstration - they are also showing up in Kickoff and the GNOME application-browser, but the KDE menu shows the clutter most obviously. Note the "Infozentrum" menu entry: All the modules are reachable through this single application, all the other items are duplicates. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211379 ------- Comment #11 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-12-02 08:17 MST ------- Think I found it: GNOME likes to use this pseudo-category for all uncategorized applications. To reproduce, remove the "Categories=" line from any .desktop file. Now, the entry associated with this .desktop file will show up in the "Applications" pseudo-category. I remember this being a problem in the past, when not all .desktop files had proper "Categories=" lines yet. The "Applications" menu was very quickly stuffed with all kinds of unsorted junk. Why does GNOME still do this? Nowadays, all modern .desktop files can be assumed to have a proper "Categories=" lines. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If it's not present, the .desktop files will be placed where there's the last <OnlyUnallocated/> item in the menu file, and we have one in applications.menu. As far as I can tell, there's no GNOME bug here. To not have the items shown in the menus, Hidden should be set to true in the desktop files.
