[Bug 449808] New: better 3D support for ATI graphics cards (radeonhd)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449808 Summary: better 3D support for ATI graphics cards (radeonhd) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: estellnb@gmail.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com Found By: Community of Practice Unfortunately the proprietary ATI driver is very erroneous. At me the computer starts to hang if I switch to another vt; after resume from s2ram the screen stays dark and last but not least the xinerama support does not allow to plug an external monitor after X has been started (restarting X requires a reboot because you produce a crash otherwise.) Fortunately the radeonhd driver works fine and stable at me. However its 3D support leaps back far behind that one of the commercial driver. Why not launch a project to improve the 3D support of radeonhd, so that programs like Google Earth will work well with the open source driver (current versions of google earth like 4.2 and 4.3 persistently crash at me anyway). This will also provide XEN-users with 3D support for their graphics cards. In general open source drivers are to prefer especially if no stable commercial counterpart is available. Otherwise is there any sense in posting error descriptions for the proprietary driver at bugzilla.novell.vom? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Google Earth and other 3D apps will never work at an acceptable speed if no hardware support for OpenGL is given by the radeonhd-driver. The ati-fglrx driver on the other side is always broken on any new kernel update. www.mesa3d.org: The GLX API is supported, but it's really just an emulation of the real thing. The GLX wire protocol is not supported and there's no OpenGL extension loaded by the X server. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Many application developers will not port their apps to Linux unless full coverage of graphics hardware is given concerning 3D support. We do already have a very well 3D support for NVIDIA-cards, don`t we? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
