Please, note that we do not support booting without a primary partition. It may work, but in general, such setup is fragile.
I've never seen any Fedora, Mandriva or Ubuntu dev make such a statement. Why do you say this? Just what about it is "fragile"? The only difference between a primary and a logical is that its partition table entry is in the MBR instead of the table chain somewhere updisk. Before libata went mainstream I saw someone report on a web page having more than 20 distros on a single HD. http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=143973 shows something similar but using multiple disks. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, of course it is possible but it is not so easy. To have distribution on logical drive, you must have in MBR code that understand what is logical partition and there is often just generic boot code which understands only primary partitions. This is not easy to ensure this usage. Another distribution maybe force MBR to contain grub, but behavior which is similar to windows and it is not way how opensuse act. So understand not supporting like you must know what you do. For newbie is not easy to configure correctly booting device from logical partition if he doesn't write grub to MBR or extended partition. I look where is problem in logs. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Without knowing more about the state of the partitioning prior to installation or what partitioning changes during installation are both acceptable and possible, this is of course false. It is only necessary to have advanced MBR code for booting a logical, instead of standard MBR code for booting only primaries, in two cases: 1-if there are no accessible primary partitions at all. Rarely is it the case that there are zero primary partitions in a multiboot system, and in non-multiboot the question of bootloader location is at worst orthagonal. 2-the desired primary bootloader cannot be present on a primary partition on the first HD. This is also rare, as typically Grub can get started from an extended if NTLDR is not already available. I know I've seen in some Linux installers an option to install no bootloader at all (or putting it only on a floppy), where it is expected and noted that some other already installed or to-be-installed bootloader will be substituted or need to be sustituted. Note that both http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Prefered_bootloader_options and http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs/grub recommend against installing non-standard MBR code whenever possible. Maybe "unsupported" is technically correct, but to say booting logical is fragile at the same time implies more danger than really exists. If a boot floppy and/or bootable USB stick is made during installation, no justification remains for saying installation to a logical is either "un"-supported or fragile. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
