https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239706 Summary: screen black when displaying some pattern Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: m.munnix@redcross.be QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com At some circumstances, the screen in X11 went dark. I seems to me that the monitor goes in "off mode" because something in the signal is bad (the monitor setup menu disapears also if displayed). After experimenting, I can now reproduce it at will when I display the attached file "gris4.bmp" (with xv or konqueror). It is a 320x320 pixel image, only two blocks of identical pixels. On the left RGB values 197,198,197 and on the right 198,199,198. The problem occurs if the frontier line between the two shades is on screen. If I pull the central part of the window off screen (I see only the left part on the right of my display or the right part of the image on the left border of the display) then the display resumes. The graphics adapter is nVidia Corporation NV28 [GeForce4 Ti 4800] and the monitor is samsung syncmaster 204B (1600x1200) with digital connection. I tried the drivers "nv" "nvidia" and "vesa". I made a standard install "Kde only" on an other partition, and installed xorg 7.3 from http://software.opensuse.org/download/xorg73/openSUSE_10.2/, same problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239706 ------- Comment #4 from m.munnix@redcross.be 2007-01-28 11:24 MST ------- Depending on where the test image is displayed, I can see it at some times or at lower resolution (switching with ctrl-alt-minus). The frontier line between the two shades is abnormally visible, seems red but if I look with a magnifying glass, I see there is a green pixel line completely switched off and another line 2 pixels to the left also green off but some of them flashing randomly. If I put the cursor in the right half of the bmp, there are 3 ghost pixels appearing to the right of the cursor (again green off or flashing randomly) The cursor is the crystalwhite arrow pointing at 11 o'clock. Would it help if I try to make a drawing of their position relative to the cursor ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I tried the drivers "nv" "nvidia" and "vesa". It happens with all these drivers?

I checked with fbdev (uggly, only 800x600 resolution available) : It shows more dots on the right of the cursor than with the other drivers. I don't see any pattern at the separation between both shades. Going over the top portion of the image with the cursor shuts down the display on the monitor. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239706 ------- Comment #12 from m.munnix@redcross.be 2007-01-29 17:11 MST ------- After experimenting a lot, here is another observation : I open konqueror and reduce the size of the window so that it is small but can display the whole picture of "gris4.bmp". As the display darkens, I switch to a lower resolution and drag the virtual screen away from the BMP. I open a konsole or a vterm and put it above the BMP (this window is bigger than the BMP). Now I switch back full resolution. Now I can experiment ! If I uncover the BMP from the left or the right, everything is fine. If I uncover the BMP from the to or the bottom the display darkens. Covering the BMP is never a problem. Actually it is only the separation line between the two shades that matters. If it is redrawn vertically -> I can see some red dots (green pixel off) before the screen darkens totally. I am about sure that the dots I described to the right of cursor in comment #4 come from the movement of the cursor (I move the cursor horizontally but as the cursor is an inclined arrow, there is a vertical component in the uncovering) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Is the fan still working? Given the card is relatively old and was a high performance card at that time, this could very well be the case. Can you check attaching the monitor by a VGA cable? If the image is fine then, the DVI transmitter and/or voltage control is broken. I don't know the protocol by heart, but it could very well be that this particular data change (from left pixel color to right one) is especially demanding in the 8B/10B coding of TDMS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
