[Bug 281084] New: Brightness not supported on Toshiba Satellite A100
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=281084 Summary: Brightness not supported on Toshiba Satellite A100 Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: behlert@novell.com ReportedBy: bugzilla.novell@friederikealthen.de QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: hmacht@novell.com, dkukawka@novell.com Neither the hotkeys, nor kpowersave change the brightness on my Toshiba Satellite A100-773. After modprobing video I can change the brightness by entering values into /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness. After this kpowersave still reports, that my hardware does not support brightness. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Unfortunatelly, the ACPI video module conflicts with other modules and laptops. But there's a patch floating around which makes the toshiba_acpi module export it's hotkeys via the input layer which will hopefully applied soon. So if you modprobe the video the hotkeys work? Does changing the brightness with kpowersave work then, too? kpowersave does support changing the brightness. One just has to restart kpowersave after modprobing video. ;) Took me a while to figure that out.

However: There is a ACPI driver for Omnibook/Toshiba laptops (http://omnibook.sourceforge.net) which could help. Friderike, can you please give a try and report back if it helps? If so, please file a new bug and ask for inclusion of this driver. Unfortunately this is probably not that easy as the driver does not ship with the upstream Linux kernel. But we might be able to create a KMP package. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=281084 ------- Comment #9 from dkukawka@novell.com 2007-06-11 09:54 MST ------- There is already a KMP package for the omnibook module and openSUSE 10.3 available. You need only to install the package and maybe load the module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=281084 ------- Comment #10 from thoenig@novell.com 2007-06-11 10:04 MST ------- Danny, do we have user space support (HAL, powersave/KPowersave, g-p-m) for the exported interfaces of omnibook? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=281084 ------- Comment #11 from dkukawka@novell.com 2007-06-11 10:59 MST ------- If the device is supported via the omnibook module it should work out of the box via HAL (you may need to restart HAL or load the module before HAL) and due to this it should also work in the other userspace tools depending on HAL -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=281084 ------- Comment #12 from thoenig@novell.com 2007-06-11 11:21 MST ------- Alright, thanks. We should investigate how we could install the omnibook by default for Toshiba laptops with Phoenix BIOS. There's probably some YaST magic we could use for that as dmidecode should tell the BIOS vendor as well as the system vendor. Friederike, please let me know if omnibook-kmp helps. Then we will decide on how to proceed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

From reading the whole bug again (especially comment #2): Are you saying that if the video module is loaded, the hotkeys work fine, but kpowersave doesn't?

When using (gnome) 10.3RC1 live CD then these keys do nothing. I've tried the above suggestions of modprobing video and/or toshiba/acpi but these have no effect, even after restarting gnome-power-manager. have you really deleted or commented out the line in /etc/modprobe.d/xorg-x11-driver-video?
