[Bug 216815] New: IDE drives on an an Intel PIIX4 controller show up as SCSI devices (/dev/sdX)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216815 Summary: IDE drives on an an Intel PIIX4 controller show up as SCSI devices (/dev/sdX) Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kcoombs@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de In openSUSE 10.2 Beta1 my Intel 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE controller is using the ata_piix module instead of the piix module as its preferred driver. The result is that my IDE drives appear to be SCSI drives (e.g. /dev/sdX instead of /dev/hdX). I acknowledge that this may have been done on purpose, for reasons I am not familiar with, by in my opinions it is bad to break the IDE/hdX SCSI/sdX model. If I modify my /etc/fstab, /boot/grub/menu.lst, and INITRD_MODULES to use hdX and piix then rebuild the ramdisk the devices come up and appear as /dev/hdX. Attached is a hwinfo and my YaST logs. For convenience, the entry for my hard drive controller from hwinfo follows: 18: PCI 07.1: 0101 IDE interface [Created at pci.281] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_7111 Unique ID: ESW+.L6YUholkGT8 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:07.1 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:07.1 Hardware Class: storage Model: "Intel 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE" Vendor: pci 0x8086 "Intel Corporation" Device: pci 0x7111 "82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE" Revision: 0x01 Driver: "ata_piix" Driver Modules: "ata_piix" I/O Ports: 0xffa0-0xffaf (rw) Module Alias: "pci:v00008086d00007111sv00000000sd00000000bc01sc01i80" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: ata_piix is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe ata_piix" Driver Info #1: Driver Status: piix is not active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe piix" Driver Info #2: Driver Status: generic is not active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe generic" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216815 ------- Comment #3 from ducalen@sympatico.ca 2006-11-01 18:10 MST ------- This bug threw me off when installing 10.2 as well. I chose not to install a bootloader in 10.2, instead I created a grub entry in my 10.1 installation. My initial grub entry included "root=/dev/hda3" but I had to change it to "root=/dev/sda3" in order to boot into 10.2 and finish the installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
