http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=934266 Bug ID: 934266 Summary: open-vm-tools crash the machine – especially after running an update procedure in Yast Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201505* Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: clauses@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created attachment 637383 --> http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/attachment.cgi?id=637383&action=edit Screenshot I’m running Tumbleweed updated to latest versions, but I keep getting these crashes of the machine – especially shortly after running Yast to check for updates, running zypper up from the commandline, running Gnome Package Updater, or waking the VM from suspension. I have the Tumbleweed installation installed in a VM in VMware Fusion 7.1.1 (Mac). The error messages is always the same: [ 2061.NNNNNN ] [drm:vmw_generic_ioctl [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Dropped master trying to access ioctl that requires authentication. This error appears, repeating itself, but in varying frequency from incident to incident. Sometime I can manage to shift to another TTY, login to root and reboot. Other times the messages are so fast I can only restart the VM (please see attached screenshot). NB: I am running the latest Tumbleweed Gnome when this happens, but I have to login using Gnome under Xorg, because in Wayland the open-vm-tools does not let me change the screen resolution to the actual resolution (it doesn’t exist under Wayland), not does the dynamic adaptive adjustment of resolution work. Since this issue with Wayland is also present in eg. Fedora 22 running as a VM in VMware Fusion, I have reported it to the open-vmware-tools github: https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/issues/22 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi!
This should be the same bug as
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=753531
There is a workaround for the vmwgfx kernel module posted in the redhat bugzilla bug mentioned in the above gnome bug.
Please apply the indicated patches to the vmwgfx kernel module to help work around the bug.
Could you point the exact URL? I failed to find a kernel patch there. And if it's about a kernel patch, for Tumbleweed, usually we take it only when upstream accepts, preferably via stable tree. (Basically same for SLE, but a bit relaxed.) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi!
The patches are attached to this bug.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1227193
I can notify you when they have entered the kernel and the gid id.
Thanks!
However, I'm not 100% sure I'll send them through stable, since they apply only to a limited number of kernel versions.
Well, you can specify the applicable kernel versions in Cc stable line as a comment. Greg usually take care of it. Is this only for Tumbleweed (4.1.x) or does it affect openSUSE 13.2 (3.16.x) or 13.1 (3.11.x)?
BTW is SLE monitoring the stable list to get fixes like this? Are all stable patches considered?
As long as it's suitable, yes. But if the commit contains the version specification and if it's not for 3.12, it may be ignored. A commit containing "Fixes:" tag would be best, then we can track down the commit (it can be included as a stable or SUSE patch to SLE12 kernel). In anyway, if the fix is needed for SLE12, I'll open the bug for SLE12. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The root problem actually originates in gnome-shell/Wayland, and the vmwgfx fix is a workaround. So it's only needed if gnome-shell/Wayland is used, for example as a display manager (--gdm)

I don't think that's needed, see above. The reason I was asking about SLE12 and stable was to find out whether it's a suitable way in general to get our kernel module fixes into SLE. Thanks, Thomas -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Let me just interject that the issue is present on Gnome/Xorg. I haven’t tested Wayland since there are other bugs in Gnome+Wayland+Open VM Tools.
In Fedora the problem arises from gdm which is a Wayland process, even if it launches Xorg for the user session. I suspect the same with openSUSE. /Thomas -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
