[Bug 782898] New: Toshiba R830 laptop battery drain when shutdown (not sleep/hibernate)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782898 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782898#c0 Summary: Toshiba R830 laptop battery drain when shutdown (not sleep/hibernate) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: swesemeyer@hotmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=507826) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=507826) lsusb -vv output User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/15.0.1 I own a Toshiba Satellite R830 laptop which I set up to triple-boot: Windows, Scientific Linux 6.3 and OpenSuse 12.2. The situation is as follows: When I shutdown the laptop from either SL 6.3 or Opensuse 12.2, the battery keeps draining (badly in SL6.3 ,eg 30% in 12hours) or very slowly (10% per day when shutting down from OpenSuse). Shutting down after using Windows, does not result in such a loss. I found a couple of similar reports on the net: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/110784, http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2052582.html and http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=64779 The last one is especially relevant as it shows that the laptop can keep some components "live" even after shutting down. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, I have disabled all these options in my BIOS but still experience the drain. In SL6.3 ignores my BIOS setting and I had to explicitly turn off the wake-on-lan option using "ethtool -s eth0 wol d" but OpenSuse reports it as disabled. Yet there still appears to some other component that does not get switched off completely. The work-around is to not shutdown but reboot the laptop and then hit the power button at the grub menu. That way the laptop is shutdown safely and switched off completely. However, that is a rather cumbersome solution and I'd be keen to find a better one! I have attached the output of both lsusb -vv and lspci -vv. Note that the lsusb file contains an entry at the very end that says that the Atheros bluetooth adapter has remote wakeup enabled which might be the culprit? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.boot into Opensuse 2.shutdown Opensuse Actual Results: laptop battery drains more than it should Expected Results: battery drain should be similar to the one achieved after shutting down from within Windows -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If, instead of using the KDE menu, I type as command line (in a console) sudo /sbin/shutdown now then the machine stops completely, as it did with opensuse 11.3 this may be related also with bug 785156 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The laptop shuts down ok but it looks as if some components are not powered off completely and thus they keep draining the battery. @Kernel-team: Is there anything else you want me to check or test in order to trouble-shoot this? Any further info you require? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Feel free to close the bug. Although I'm pretty sure for a while it had gone away but with all updates applied, I again get a power drain of about 10% per day after shutdown(not such power drain occurs when shutting down from within Windows). Only way of avoiding this, is to reboot and press the power off button at the grub menu as mentioned in the original bug report. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
