[Bug 338300] New: LILO cannot write files in the bootstrap partition ( No space left on device).
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338300 Summary: LILO cannot write files in the bootstrap partition (No space left on device). Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: PowerPC OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: iakynet@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other Hello. I have a problem booting to a just installed openSUSE 10.3, related to a problem writing the boot files to the bootstrap partition. The first stage of the openSUSE installation goes fine. Then after the first reboot, instead the tipical lilo/yaboot screen, it is shown a white screen with a small folder icon in the center of the screen, and a second later MacOSX is booted. I can only boot to openSUSE with the "boot hard disk system" option, in the installation type selection of the openSUSE installer. Now in openSUSE, this is the output of LILO: serenity:/home/ignacio # lilo running on pmac_new BOOT_DEVICEPATH = &device;:&partition; OTHER_DEVICEPATH = Volume name is "bootstrap" Volume was created on Fri Oct 12 19:48:47 2007 Volume was last modified on Sat Oct 27 22:27:31 2007 Volume has 419840 bytes free hcopy: ":Finder": volume full (No space left on device) hcopy: ":System": volume full (No space left on device) hcopy: ":os-chooser": volume full (No space left on device) bootstrap:suseboot: f FNDR/MACS 0 0 Oct 31 22:24 Finder f tbxi/chrp 0 0 Oct 31 22:24 os-chooser f zsys/MACS 0 0 Oct 31 22:24 System f BINA/UNIX 0 419122 Oct 31 22:24 yaboot f TEXT/R*ch 0 311 Oct 31 22:24 yaboot.conf set OF boot-device /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:9,\\:tbxi So there seems to be not available space in the bootstrap partion (hda9)... serenity:~ # mkdir bootstrap_partition serenity:~ # mount /dev/hda9 bootstrap_partition/ serenity:~ # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda11 11G 3.0G 6.7G 31% / udev 378M 120K 377M 1% /dev /dev/hda12 12G 792M 11G 7% /home /dev/hda13 3.1G 2.7G 242M 92% /usr/local /dev/hda9 797K 797K 0 100% /root/bootstrap_partition The bootstrap partition contains a directory called "suseboot", and some files for a previous installation of Fedora. I deleted all the files, but then not all the partition space is free: serenity:~ # rm -r bootstrap_partition/* serenity:~ # ls -a bootstrap_partition/ .. serenity:~ # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda11 11G 3.0G 6.7G 31% / udev 378M 120K 377M 1% /dev /dev/hda12 12G 792M 11G 7% /home /dev/hda13 3.1G 2.7G 242M 92% /usr/local /dev/hda9 797K 387K 410K 49% /root/bootstrap_partition Anyway, I unmounted the partition and run LILO again, but the problem is the same: no space left on device. Maybe the 'yaboot' file is too big? Or maybe the lilo command should clean the bootstrap partition before writing the boot files? A second lilo execution, without removing the files, shows this: serenity:~ # lilo running on pmac_new BOOT_DEVICEPATH = &device;:&partition; OTHER_DEVICEPATH = Volume name is "bootstrap" Volume was created on Fri Oct 12 19:48:47 2007 Volume was last modified on Wed Oct 31 22:54:48 2007 Volume has 0 bytes free <<<================= (look at this) hcopy: ":yaboot.conf": volume full (No space left on device) hcopy: ":yaboot": volume full (No space left on device) hcopy: ":Finder": volume full (No space left on device) hcopy: ":System": volume full (No space left on device) hcopy: ":os-chooser": volume full (No space left on device) bootstrap:suseboot: f FNDR/MACS 0 0 Oct 31 22:55 Finder f zsys/MACS 0 0 Oct 31 22:55 System f BINA/UNIX 0 0 Oct 31 22:55 yaboot f TEXT/R*ch 0 0 Oct 31 22:55 yaboot.conf f tbxi/chrp 0 0 Oct 31 22:55 os-chooser set OF boot-device /pci@f2000000/mac-io@17/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:9,\\:tbxi In spite of the 49% particion space used after removing all the files, the issue is that I can install other Linux distros, like Fedora, without any of this problems... So I think this should be an openSUSE issue. In the other hand, I installed previously openSUSE 10.3 RC1 and it do not have this issue, but I cannot install it again because I deleted the ISO and the torrent seems to be not very active at this moment. This is my machine: serenity:~ # cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 cpu : 7455, altivec supported clock : 867.000000MHz revision : 0.2 (pvr 8001 0302) bogomips : 86.51 timebase : 33331438 platform : PowerMac machine : PowerBook3,5 motherboard : PowerBook3,5 MacRISC2 MacRISC Power Macintosh detected as : 80 (PowerBook Titanium IV) pmac flags : 0000001b L2 cache : 256K unified pmac-generation : NewWorld And this is all... Other distros may put the files into the root directory. A partition less than 1MB will always be formated from now on. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
