[Bug 1201557] New: Whole system has become generally unstable, basically useless lately
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1201557 Bug ID: 1201557 Summary: Whole system has become generally unstable, basically useless lately Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Other Assignee: screening-team-bugs@suse.de Reporter: php4fan@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Since some relatively recent updates, a lot of applications (basically all those that I use regularly) have become unstable: - GIMP - Google Chrome - PhpStorm - PlasmaShell among others By unstable I mean that any one of these applications will at any random time start to: - mostly stop responding to keyboard and/or mouse - random rectangles within its window will frantically flicker and show random garbage - sometimes just freeze - become completely unusable and I'll eventually be forced to close it and restart it It's hard to believe that all of these random unrelated applications (that also happen to be basically every single application that I use on a daily basis) just got bugs with identical symptoms all at the same time. It must be something at the system level. Note that usually they don't all freeze or become unresponsive or go berserk at the same time. They will do that separately and independently of each other. I've been reporting bugs to most of those applications until I've come to realize that they are exhibiting the same nonsensical behavior and all started at about the same time. This is obviously critical as it renders the whole system unusable and often leads to the loss of unsaved work. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

The randomness suggests some possibility you've developed a RAM or memory controller problem, or possibly some other hardware failure, maybe heat related. Do you do anything to ensure the laptop is running as cool as possible? Have you tried running memtest86 (not memtest86+, which is unrelated except by name to memtest86)? How often are you running zypper dup? Have you tried a virgin user? -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

maybe heat related
The noise of the cooling fan is not even audible when these things happen, nor most of the time in general (and yes, it does get audible when I have abnormally high CPU consumption). So, it's definitely not heat-related (or, if the heat has got so bad that it has damaged the hardware or is affecting its ability to work properly, and yet the cooling fan isn't even barely making an effort, then there would have to be a huge bug somewhere in regulating the fan speed).
Have you tried running memtest86?
Not before. I've tried now and: $ memtest86 If 'memtest86' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this: cnf memtest86 $ cnf memtest86 memtest86: command not found
How often are you running zypper dup?
Manually from a terminal, almost never. I usually click "Instal Updates" from the Software Updates widget-or-whatever-its-called. I do that every few days, sometimes weeks. When that fails with errors (and because it's stupid and doesn't give me options to what to do about them) _then_ I run zypper dup.
Have you tried a virgin user?
No. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Many TW users who claim reliable service only use zypper. It's well tested, much better than the software updates widget, which as you say, can be stupid. I only ever use zypper for TW updates.
Have you tried a virgin user?
No.
It's a standard troubleshooting procedure, intended to determine whether happens only to one user, or not. It only to one user, it usually is pointing to a problem with user settings, possibly corruption. Well then why does OpenSUSE come with the widget installed by default? (actually that's obviously the way to go, the real question is why isn't enough effort put into making it as complete and as reliable as zypper dup) Anyway, I ran memtest86 and it found no errors in 4 passes (2 hours). Can we dismiss the hypothesis of a hardware failure?
(virgin user) It's a standard troubleshooting procedure
Well I don't have the time for that.

I see nothing to distinguish this from bug 1184817
I see a couple of things that might: 1) 1184817 seemed to systematically go away when using wifi network and reappear when using wired network. This one persists regardless. This one clearly has nothing to do with wired network. I have disconnected the USB-to-ethernet adapter entirely, and I'm still suffering from the issue. 1) the symptoms are different. That one usually started with lack of response to keyboard and mouse actions. There was never any flickering nor instances of different pieces of the screen being inconsistent with each other. This one usually starts with random flickering of parts of the screen, then parts of the screen apparently failing to update, or "blinking" between displaying current and random previous content. When stuff starts to stop responding entirely, I actually wonder whether "behind the screen" applications are actually responding and doing their job but the display is just not updating. I haven't been able to test and either confirm or discard that hypothesis, because it's very hard to tell, and in order to do that you would have to be able to interact "blindly" with applications without any visual feedback. I'm not good at that. Having said that, it's _possible_ that they are the same bug, but it would mean that: - when I repeatedly tested stopping using ethernet and using it again, it was a complete coincidence that 1184817 seemed to go away when not using ethernet, while it was infact completely random - the symptoms changed pretty drammatically and overnight for some reason (or have always been random and by pure chance I have lately been observing different variations of them). All that seems unlikely, although not impossible. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
